Here are some photos of Anwar. It doesn't look at all like I have heard it described.

- Um, what areas around that arctic refuge are already used for oil drilling. Please indicate on mapTheBlueOne

if looks are a justifiable, admissible argument as to why it is either a) intelligent, b) sustainable, c) productive, or d) remotely with a fucking clue to drill for oil in the Alaskan arctic refuge of ANWR; then i will cut off my nards.
- Some people act like we're it's gonna come out of the ground and go straight into our tanks. Could be years before we'd see the benefitlocustsloth
- any benefitlocustsloth
- right, point taken. It just doesn't look anything like I have A) I have heard it described, and B) the photos I've seen so far in the media.designbot

not to mention the notion that there could be other, more valuable reasons this administration (and others) have proposed the idea.

Anwar drilling will be like a heroin addict scraping the bottom of the barrel for a hit. The underlying problem is an oil based economy that needs to move on to other energy sources. You're just prolonging the inevitable...
I am hardly a tree hugger. Nature isn't "gentle mother earth"..no nature is one massively fucked up and crazy thing. Think about it - what massively giant fucked up unbalanced thing must've happend on the earth to create such a massive die-off of life to create such vast quantities of pooled oil to begin with. We humans have evolved in a rather benign space in earth's history - and we're doing our damnest to push the environmental envelope in all sorts of ways away from the baseline that has allowed our species to evolve and thrive. I would like humanity to continue to thrive - and to paraphrase Lincoln - I could care less if we do it with or without the spotted owl, but on the current path we'll be not thriving and killing the spotted owl or whatever tree hugger mascot you would like to stick here.
I'm not for mother nature - who has done and will do her best to fuck us up at every turn - I'm for humans and creating the best conditions in which we can hold off natures wild swings...

yeah, because you can really trust the government when they say "this is all we want, we promise."
honestly the proposal to drill the entire refuge from a single spot and go outwards underground, even IF that was plausible and even if the government was trustworthy at this point, it is still delaying the inevitable. and the drilling wouldn't have any impact for 8-10 years. it's not like we say "okay" and suddenly gas goes down to $2 a gallon again.
it's merely being held as an option on the table by those who would profit most for reasons of delaying what is now the inevitable fall of the big oil companies from the most profitable corporations in america to secondhand means of energy sources.
- also, being from alaska, i can tell you there's plenty of space up there that's lush and beautiful.colin_s

- How long is the lead time to build the infrastructure to build a drilling operation? Five years sounds about right...TheBlueOne

I am hearing a lot of thoughts and opinions (which is cool) but can someone actually post some facts/articles. Like for instance, where did you hear that it would take "8-10 years" for the drilling to have any impact?
Also, Ito quote theBlueOne:
"The underlying problem is an oil based economy that needs to move on to other energy sources"I totally agree, but moving to alternative energy sources is not going to happen over night. We need some plausible solutions in the interim, or we are really going to be screwed. Drilling on our own land (no matter where it is) seems like the good, short term solution, that we need.

Petrol prices will never ever decrease. There is utterly billions of oil out there enough to keep us going for centuries and centuries, however it's such a terrible way of getting energy, hurry up scientists do something good and find an answer yo!.
Environmentalists don't solve problems scientists do!!.
- I am doing a video for a company that finds oil. The guy showed me loads of graphschossy
- centuries and centuries??? no way jose!! you are so WRONG on that front.Khurram
- and actually, oil is the BEST way of getting energy known to man so far...Khurram
- most environmentalists i know are scientists.lowimpakt
- Thank fuck for that lowimpact :D a double whammy if you like. Lets hope they can find something wicked cool like that kid

Show me the part where drilling on our own land decreases prices. The price of oil gets set on the world market. The problem is that demand is so high because of the Chinese and other emerging economies.
- ..and speculative trading.detritus
- not actually speculative trading. Read this detritus: http://www.economist…Khurram
- To hell with you and your facts, kuz. I think in fact I was mixing up oil and wheat/ corn prices, but I'm likely wrongdetritus
- there too. I really need to take up reading The Economist regularly again - I only bother with the tech quarterlies these daysdetritus
- damn. 'days'.
Anyway, check your gmail.detritus

this breaks my heart. seriously.

Private companies have engineered some pretty unique/fast/safe methods these days - they can go in and suck oil out rather quickly leaving a ridiculously low footprint in comparison to years past...
... anyway - whenever I hear the argument that ANYTHING is going to take time...
... I think back to when I was 23 and thought to myself... "shit - if I start college now... I won't finish until I'm 27 at the earliest given my personal situation... why bother?"
:) I hope you see my point.
----
Side Point: We (the U.S.) are the Saudi Arabia of Coal. Coal can be liquefied / engineered into a gasoline source.
Did you know that Hitler (and this is back in the 30's) did all his conquering w/out any oil? It was all engineered coal. :)
I do realize it's a fossil fuel / non-renewable resource... but we do have it in abundance and SOMETHING needs to happen here.
- It can almost be practically stated that Hitler lost the war BECAUSE of his lack of availability to oil.simple_space
- lol... so it had nothing to do with the allied powers coming together like they did...PonyBoy
- ... and no... i'm not interested in arguing about this... you too are purposely missing the point. ;)PonyBoy
- I catch your point, but in the end, his engineered coal was not enough, the same way it wouldn't be nowsimple_space
- so your point is 'don't bother'?
something has to happen... and there aren't any immediate 'other resources' just yet...PonyBoy - ... now i'm back to my 'why goto school' point. :)PonyBoy
- Nuclear is another resource.simple_space
- yes yes!! :)
... although - I've been 'nuking' my food for years now. :)PonyBoy

Why not apply that same thinking to other alternate sources?

"Did you know that Hitler (and this is back in the 30's) did all his conquering w/out any oil? It was all engineered coal. :)"
And that turned out well for him and the Germans, no?
- You purposely missed the point... there's no need to be like that. ;)PonyBoy

Have you not read the Journal Science lately? If it's not pretty, it holds no environmental value and can be destroyed with no regret. There is scientific concensus on that issue.
- linkage...?TheBlueOne
- yeah. those scientific sciences who got a nice free vacation package so they could agree.akrokdesign
- wha?... yeah... link that - or make your sarcasm clear, please. :)PonyBoy
- Very sarcasticSoler

The problem is that people think drilling in America will decrease prices FOR US specifically. It won't. We don't get some kind of special deal on the oil just because it comes from Alaska...
- +1akrokdesign
- It'll help alleviate foreign dependence though... which is a pretty big deal these days.PonyBoy
- it's about supply and demand. Sure we wont get some kind of "special deal", but it will help balance the supply.designbot
