I'm not an anti-gun guy at all. I am just saying banning guns in DC is a lot different than banning guns in wyoming.

- Exactly. One wonders why Scalia can't wrap his reptilian brain around that.TheBlueOne
- Banning them in Wyoming is a lot different than banning them in Baghdada.********

Statistically you're far less safe with a gun on the house. Guns in the house are a hazard more than anything. From the statistics alone there is a Virgina Tech massacre every four days in the US.

why do stats always track by race, what does it matter , a gun is a gun a death is a death

The problem with these statistics is that they don't account for the context of each incident. For instance, whether those guns were obtained legally or not. Also, if they were illegal would those responsible be deterred from buying handguns. I think the answer is likely no, probably the best evidence of a similar trend is with the 'war on drugs'. The two major solutions to this are simple: outlaw guns and see if it works, or crack down harder on illegal activity and maybe put more sensible regulations on gun purchases (e.g. requiring a license, deeper background checks, purchase records including copy of photo id, etc).

- most likely legally obtained, I doubt there is track of the illegal obtained gunsMeeklo
- Those regulations already exist and don't work.Mimio
- Those regulations actually don't exist. You can also be a convicted criminal and buy a gun.ismith
- The background checks are very light and quick, they don't take your photo, and the only license you need to buy a gun is a driver's license.ismith
- is a driver's license.ismith

tey only thing all 50 states don;t do is record their license image.Mimio - ...photoMimio
- But you only need a driver's license, there is no 'gun license'. And there are background checks, but believe me they don't look at them very carefully.ismith

at some point all guns were bought legally, right?
- Not necessarily. People certainly can make their own guns and buy from illegal manufacturers, etc.ismith
- i suppose so, but that was probably when there weren't laws against buying onelocustsloth

To mrdobolina comment of defending with a gun in the city, I've seen a few articles on it. One was a person being carjacked, and they shot the person. However it's only been about 2 articles on it, and that's been living in high gun violence areas for most of my life.
Nice surprise for the jacker :)

I think the main issue here is that people confuse (maybe intentionally) the term "Defense" with "Counter-Attack".

High court strikes down gun ban.
AH SHOOT.
Refresh if fail.
- TheBlueOne0
Just because you carry a gun doesn't mean you can defend yourself. If in fact more people do carry guns for "self-defense" it's not like the criminals will get together and say "Oh man fellas, the jig is up. Nice run while it lasted, eh? Well, my cousin owns a barbershop, maybe I'll see if he needs some help sweeping the floors. Whacha thinkin' of doing Slice?"
Crime will continue, only the nature and pattern of attacks will change - leading to more violent and ambush like attacks. It's a Red Queen effect in action.
Furthermore, just buying and carrying a weapon means diddlysquat unless you invest some serious hours in using it under real stress conditions...

did anyone else here read the decision?
Scalia is a big, dense, wind-bag; a very intelligent wind-bag, but nonetheless. It is ridiculous to concern that the Constitution “The operative clause’s text and history demonstrate that it connotes an individual right to keep and bear arms.” (pulled from NYT article, and ruling). I mean, honestly- the document is not intended to be evolving and serving of the peoples it rules over at any given time? Nuts.
- It's funny how some alterations are deemed ok, while others are considered atrocities to the documentlocustsloth
- he knows what they meant just as much as jeffererson knew what free meant to a slave********
- that then makes his interpretation correct?madirish

Guns suck... they're deadly / dangerous / involved in lots of 'accidents'...
... two friends in high school shot to death by guns... another got a hold of dad's gun and ended his life in the fucking barn...
... i dunno...
... guns are nothing but a quick method towards death / accidents FAR MORE than they are as just pure 'protection'.
I agree w/dobs, flav etc... the argument that a gun can be used to stop a crime is rather ridiculous...
... the average citizen / person freezes up and does DUMB SHIT when put in a dangerous situation (being held up... someone breaking into their homes etc)...
... I just don't buy the argument either.
Guns blow... backspace Number 2 (which is what it is) out of the B.O.R... A.S.A.P... P.I.I.T.B.

"all pistols must be registered with police"...
I think this is a very fair regulation, this pretty much does the things I suggested above. I think people here who have never purchased a gun might not realize how easy it is (unfortunately) for almost anyone to get one legally.
- Last I checked all handguns require a pistol permit at purchase, but not so for larger guns.ismith
- hard to conceal an elephant gun in your pants.

Interesting how broad the Supreme Court interprets the 2nd amendment today - so broadly as to give the benefit of the doubt to the individual and the enforcement of his rights on carrying a firearm in despite the odd and unclear statement "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state", yet somehow uses an incredibly narrow legal construct to say it's OK for the government to spy on you despite the clear language in the statement "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause..." when it seems to this observer that the 2nd example is far more clear and exact in intent and meaning...
In other words, they utilize the "original intent" framework for pure political purposes while wearing their sanctimonious impartial rulings on their sleeves.*
*I think I mixed about three metaphors there.
- Such a strange double standard here. Fear outweighs any type of outrage.Mimio
