i though the debate about validity of abstract art is looong over -- the fact that people still debate it blows my mind - get over it, it IS art.

Yeah, I get it - but I hate artists who's whole act is "questioning your assumptions about art"
I am definitely a fan of non-objective art though

the thing about modern art is that is has become so theoretical and self referential that you need a Ph D to tell the difference between the real deal and poo flung at the wall by a monkey.
Unless you can describe to me why the scribble art above is worth millions and my 4th grade scribbles are not:D

why PhD? You like those flowers above? Cool! You don't like, it's cool too! There often isn't much more then that.
The reason why some art is worth money and some isn't is really related to the market -- i mean you have ebay where people sell stuff that some people are ready to spend serious$$ for it -- why, because the feel like it. With art you have people with $$ who want to buy art for many reasons -- sometimes as trivial as because it will look good in their living room, sometimes because someone told them it will gain value or sometimes because they heard it's "high art." As with everything is some art just stupid mumbo-jumbo? Yes, but so with everything else. Then again you would be foolish to think that some artist out there invested thousands of dollars to buy canvas and pains and studio space and just "scribbled" around without believing in it.

it amazes me that people still say things like " my kid could do that"
yes they could! thats kinda the point. when i was a kid i used to love drawing scribbles and doodling on the walls, then all of a sudden, i went to school and the powers that be encouraged me to stop. its taken me years and years to get back to what i really love doing :-)

If your kid could do that then really, you should be encouraging them. And if you let them do that then good on you. I just don't understand why anyone would ever say, disrespectfully, 'my kid could do that'. Is it not demeaning your kid too - 'even my kid could do that'?
As well as the above, Greenberg's collected essays are very good. Heavy, but worth reading and understanding. Abstract art is, in a sense, true art, figurative art is reproduction [but still as worthy!].
