the gimp?

Is it me or has everyone missed the fact that no software actually works on vista?
You have to buy completely new software FOR EVERYTHING.
It's because the admin account has been changed which all applications used to refer to. Thus:
NOTHING WORKS

dobs- i'm not using them as desktop machines, just web, db, and file servers. in fact, i don't have a gui on any of them, just the command line. my flatmate has myth tv on an ubuntu box. i just got a usb mpeg2 video converter, thought i might give that a shot

VISTA is a dog. A wet, stinky, fat three-legged dog.
The developers here have been testing VISTA for about 5 months now and they all have removed it from their machines.
It's still running on one test-bed computer here and it's slower than snot on a cold winters day.
No current software will work on it and from what they've reported any 'illegal' software they think will be found and reported behind the scenes.
No Zune connectivity, which is laughable.
And something about "... if one goes down they all go down..." which I'm still not quite sure about what they meant. I don't know if they were talking about networked computers running VISTA that if one gets infected/corrupted/stalled they all do as they're running together, or if one application/software goes down the whole system goes down. I walked in on the last half of the conversation.
And, I guess you have to have an ultra fast computer to run all the overkill functionality from about 2 years ago on it.
I just installed Tiger on my iBook 1.33 G4 and it runs brilliantly. I'd like to see VISTA run on a 2 year old PC.
To each his own I guess.

acescense, how does mythTV work on it?
I kinda want to setup a linux box for dvr but have like a million other projects going on right now.

I've been running Vista beta/rtm on a separate partition for a while now. Going from xp 32-bit to vista 64, for me (apparently I'm in the minority on this issue) provided a substantial speed increase. Everything was quick and responsive, even with all the effects and flip 3D. Seldom does any OS keep up with the multitasking, keyboard happy beating I throw at it, but Vista wasn't too shabby. Beats XP. Microsoft finally has a decent search function. I like the gadgets simply because anyone can code them.. So the indie gadgets will eventually provide some decent desktop enhancement.
-as an aside, I'm currently waiting for my PSD to load in OSX. It has been 5 minutes so far. I suppose it doesn't like 300 layer files so much.
Anyone out there try Ubuntu with Beryl? I might have to run that as a second option on my PC to Vista.

can I run adobe/macromedia stuff under Unix?

I find it funny that Microsoft is constantly ripping UI from the Mac and not it apparently takes a very hefty machine to even run vista. OSX is running just fine on my 5 year old g4 at home - idiocy. Most people are saying not to bother with vista - upgrading takes about 6 hours - is this some sort of incentive to buy a new machine? I think MS is really choking on this one, I've heard so little positive press. If anything I bet Apple will benefit from users resorting to a better option. Is it really true, that all software will have to be replaced? Sounds like fun.

(Jan 30 07, 09:19)Incorrect.
you guys are making opinions on software that you've never even used. past windows versions, fine. but if you haven't used vista, you haven't used it.
is apple spreading some anti-vista scare tactics or something?
i've been running vista on and off for the past year, in its various release stages. i have RTM right here running. it's fine. it runs your software. it looks pretty nice (except for the garish drop shadows), it's secure enough to let me know if there are any strange processes running in the background, the new media player is nice. and so on... it's not a big deal, heaven or hell, it's a computer operating system.
a lot of these comments remind me of people who talk about bands they've never listened to.

(Jan 30 07, 09:27)he's got it running fairly smoothly now after a rocky start, but he has a pretty complicated setup- three different video cards and 2 audio cards. occasionally the front end will crash, though the back end that handles all the scheduling and recording is pretty rock solid.
ubuntu has a distro that's got myth tv as part of the install and is pre-tuned to work well with it, probably a good place to start

>>>Is it really true, that all software will have to be replaced? Sounds like fun.
No, this is not true.
It has so many small nice features that once you get used to it you'll not miss XP.

Now I'm sure I'll be waiting some time before installing it. I also hate huge graphics and there's no need for fancy motion things.

I have a Intel iMac at work and I'm running Windows XP on it because I can't stand how slow and dumb OSX is. Windows XP runs all adobe applications at least 3x faster, but my biggest gripe about OSX is file management. Why is there no way to cut/paste files/folders from one folder to another?
The only people that should be using Macs are print designers and grandmas that got an iPod for Christmas.

Anyone know if it's possible to install Vista on a Intel iMac?

(Jan 30 07, 11:50)Notice I said, cut/paste (as in Move), not copy/paste...
Windows has the option to do either ctrl-c to copy, ctrl-x to cut, ctrl-v to paste.

"Will Microsoft Vista users present any challenges to our system?"
Ding, ding, ding, ding!!!
Human Resources always willing to take the dunce cap off of our Graphics Department, haha.
I'd say it's a cute question, but I can't respond with that, I'm just not responding.
Perhaps later in passing say I upgraded to Vista, and ever since I haven't been able to get e-mail.
