I've been running Vista beta/rtm on a separate partition for a while now. Going from xp 32-bit to vista 64, for me (apparently I'm in the minority on this issue) provided a substantial speed increase. Everything was quick and responsive, even with all the effects and flip 3D. Seldom does any OS keep up with the multitasking, keyboard happy beating I throw at it, but Vista wasn't too shabby. Beats XP. Microsoft finally has a decent search function. I like the gadgets simply because anyone can code them.. So the indie gadgets will eventually provide some decent desktop enhancement.
-as an aside, I'm currently waiting for my PSD to load in OSX. It has been 5 minutes so far. I suppose it doesn't like 300 layer files so much.
Anyone out there try Ubuntu with Beryl? I might have to run that as a second option on my PC to Vista.
