what is the benefit of not having brakes when riding in the city.
just to feel like a badass?
I mean if it is a weight issue, what do brakes weigh, 1 pound?
seems kinda foolish.

s_9 what do you ridE?
alleycats are fun. the worst one was the jumpinships this year in columbus... it was 30 degrees and raining the whole day!

one thing is for sure, there's nothing like a fixed gear in the snow. hands down.

riding any bike, no matter what kind, does not make one cool.
follow sheep.

yeah you can skid for miles
- e_b_c0
much better in snow. esp if you have a frame that can take knobbies.
makes your problem-solving skills better and your reaction time faster
VASTLY improves road/mtb riding skill. you will be pedaling through shit that you NEVER thought possible before. (same with 20"ers. take 4'-5' jumps on one of those and you WILL be smoother. or you will go to the hospital.)
makes you stronger. you will sore at first, no matter how much you ride a coasting bike.
fewer mechanical problems.
if the average jackass grabs your bike chances of them ahving ANY idea what they are getting into and will probably eat shit in about 100 feet.

I ride a black & white 53cm IRO 48x16 gear ratio with Velocity rims & Paul hubs assembled by the lovely Arone at Bike Works NYC (http://www.bikecult.com).
I hate cold races. I almost froze my fingers off during Drag Race. And Monster Track this year - guh. One dude had icicles of sweat off the brim of his cap.
My road bike is a carbon fiber Aegis. I don't lock that thing up though.

i thought about getting an iro for the winter so i can put some fatties on it... my bike has zero tire clearance. do you like those paul hubs? i need a new wheelset and was looking at those and phils for something bombproof
- e_b_c0
phils.
cheaper, just as good.
- MLP0
phils are cheaper? i thought phils were way better/more expensive than pauls
- s_90
I'm pretty sure the Phil's are more expensive. My Paul's were uh...surplus sponsor schwag from the Cycle Messenger World Championships. I love 'em. My bike took off before I started pedaling the first time I put them on.

I ride an MG30 mt. bike.
Other than a few quad muscles that seem to be useful only towards biking, I have noticed *no* difference in health after riding it avidly.

nice... i'm riding these shotty KHS stock wheels... i just repacked the bearings and its still rough.

Yeah lots of people ride brakeless but many more ride without a helmet. I'd say helmetless make you more prone to injury than brakeless.
You can still stop a brakeless track bike (although it requires more experience), but hit your head without a helmet and you're screwed.
Of course I don't have a helmet either... :/
I gotta get one.

at the shop where i buy my junk pauls are more expensive. maybe becuse they are the ano-black. i dunno.
I've gotten amazingly luck and happened upon two pair of suntour superbe pro track hubsets. best gruppo of all time. DAAANG!

i think the precevied stigma about helmets is interesting.
I own a helmet, but don't always wear it. The decision is made depending on length and intensity of the ride.
i have gotten the feeling talking to some people that they feel like helmets aren't cool. (and i guess they are not) but i have never, nor even heard of anyone make fun of wearing helmets.
hmm..
