Yeah lots of people ride brakeless but many more ride without a helmet. I'd say helmetless make you more prone to injury than brakeless.
You can still stop a brakeless track bike (although it requires more experience), but hit your head without a helmet and you're screwed.
Of course I don't have a helmet either... :/
I gotta get one.
