Rites of Spring comes to mind first when I think of "emo." But PUTTER definitely knows what he's talking about about. Basically, I consider it bands that came out of DC following the "Revolution Summer."
And I wouldn't classify Turning Point or Vision as emo but rather melodic hardcore.

i think only puter got it right. but i didnt read through all the posts.
- lifeinbinary0
so do we have a definition for emo yet? a summary would be nice.
- adamfinger0
I don't know if there is an exact definition.
But I'd still classify it as a reaction to the "violence" of hardcore in DC during the mid-80s. There are obvious hardcore roots in the music and philosophy (ie, DIY), but it's a lot more mellow.
Emo has nothing to do with the mall-punk coming out today.

well emo today (or a while back) is quite convoluted and has evolved (from its hardcore roots) to anything anyone want it to be. Alot of these emo bands you just don't understand why they call themselves emo, cus its soft rock.
Indie soft rock.

it also "evolved" into a fashion stereotype. but i hate it when people think its all about the black hair and what not,.

...and horned rim glasses, and cardigans, and thrift store clothing, and poetry, and ironic belts, and girls that think they're good at kissing, and rear windows adorned with band stickers, and anyone in a high school band that is tolerate by the cheerleaders, and skateboarders, and high school coffee drinkers.

ok, I still haven't read this the whole way through, but I'm getting the sense no one knows what emo is. But if someone does, please post a link to an mp3 I can listen to.
thankyou

Emo (an abbreviation of "emotional") is a term now broadly used to describe almost any form of guitar-driven alternative rock that expresses emotions beyond traditional rock's limited emotional palette of alienation and rage.
It is also used to describe fans of this genre, most commonly teenagers. (e.g., emo kid). The actual term "emo" originated in the mid-1980s D.C. scene, with the band Rites of Spring. The term addressed both the way the band connected with its audience, as well as its tendency to deal more with topics of personal and relationship politics than with the standard themes of rock music.

if you need a definition , it's basically this:
emo spawned from the hardcore scene when the lyrical content dealt with more personal and less political issues. the musician and the music fused together violently in live shows of cathartic nature, which spawned acts that deliberatly approached this method of creation (see my previous post with ATD-I, planes mistaken for stars, etc.)
next round came the anti-hardcore approach by bands like jimmy eat world and mineral, who used the less traditional punk rock method of epic melody in order to create an almost storytelling experience with the music to the listener (see their respective albums "clarity" and "power of failing".)
nowadays, the 'emo' label is picked up for acts like dashboard confessional and taking back sunday, bands with no real artistic merit, yet they needed to replace the now-vacant boy band genre with something... so what better than cute boys with broken hearts?

- lifeinbinary0
so in conclusion, rand is emo.
there's your definition.

It's a real task for me to not write a song that could ever be labeled emo.
That's why I write about:
Plane crashes
Submarine research
Seeing a girl sans clothing for the first time
Death from heroin ODAnd, my favorite, inspired by the book War of the Worlds, our song "Profit & Panic" about holding back from fleeting, rabid sex in the face of death at the hands of alien machines staring you down as you hide in a corn field.
Emo THAT Chris Carraba!
