    if you need a definition , it's basically this:

    emo spawned from the hardcore scene when the lyrical content dealt with more personal and less political issues. the musician and the music fused together violently in live shows of cathartic nature, which spawned acts that deliberatly approached this method of creation (see my previous post with ATD-I, planes mistaken for stars, etc.)

    next round came the anti-hardcore approach by bands like jimmy eat world and mineral, who used the less traditional punk rock method of epic melody in order to create an almost storytelling experience with the music to the listener (see their respective albums "clarity" and "power of failing".)

    nowadays, the 'emo' label is picked up for acts like dashboard confessional and taking back sunday, bands with no real artistic merit, yet they needed to replace the now-vacant boy band genre with something... so what better than cute boys with broken hearts?
