in my day- EMO and melodic hardcore were the same things-
Agnostic Front, Breakdown, Leeway, Sub Zero, and Vision on a show...
Which band do you think the new found emo scene related to?
If you ever been to a Middlesex college show in New Jersey you would know the Turning Point was EMO...

Sunny Day Real Estate's "Diary" and any album from The Promise Ring are pretty definitive of emo IMO.

The Promise Ring is the beginning of what gave EMO a bad name. Turning guitar driven melodic music into sissy boy nerdcore.
Now that I think of it- that is exactly where the shit went boy band- Pieces of Texas is the Reason, The Promise Ring, The Get Up Kids (which by the way had no interest in hardcore before the band- use to open mics at bars).. and then Dashboard Confessional nailed the coffin.

Is Slayer emo? If so emo KICKS ASS!

Is Tiger Trap [now Sleater Kinney] emo??

EMO kids tend to have a fascination with SLAYER- (probably to pretend their not as fruity as the seem)

If it's not a boy band in hot pants on MTV touring with Sparks sponsorship- then it is not emo- if they don't have a hit on TRL they are not EMO.
old EMO is dead- has been for 10 years now. It now just a T-Shirt and a rock ballad with cooler haircuts.

I think Franz Ferdinand sucks, same goes for modest Mouse..

That's a shame Mr.S -
a real shame your missing the beauty..
To each their own- we are suppose to HATE anything popular now-a-days...rave on brother.
- mr_snuggles0
Aren't they as popular and trendy as Outkast and Brittany Spears?
I don't get it....

i am emo unstable.

there is enough for everyone.

I like your attitude puter, respect...

Puter, I'm originally from NJ so I've been to a bunch of Middlesex shows. You're obviously older than me, but I know what you are talking about when it comes to Agnostic Front/Leeway vs. Turning Point.
However, I still wouldn't classify them as emo. Emo bands generally have a very low tolerance for breakdowns and mosh. TP wouldn't fit into that.

have to kind of agree with you...it was a..maturing of emo if you will..maybe not maturing...but don't forget mineral and cristie front drive...IMHO the two bands that really led the new emo side of things...Jimmy Eat World were in there too for their first couple of albums...

Not as emo is now-a-days to a degree (Thrice has plenty of mosh parts- and EMO kids love them_there still is plenty of rockin emo- screamo IS the new emo.. you don't think all those pretty scensters are jammin Dashboard do you? That's for mall chicks) but back then that WAS emo.
Hell- New York city kids considered Drive Like Jehu, and Fugazi a sissy emo bands to pick on.
Shit has changed over the years- but Turning Point was one of the Pioneers of the "emo" sound- Skip the singer, a good firend of mine (RIP) was as EMO as they come- did you ever here "Shadow Season" or "GodSpeed" or any of the other projects they had?
It all doesn't fucking matter really- but what SPIN magazine thinks is EMO today- was not then... when it started... EMO then wasn't watered down rock- it was rock- it was hardcore- thus even it's original term "Emotional Hardcore". A typical "emo" show would be-
Turning Point
Flagman
Lifetime
EndPointAgain, shit was sappy- but raw- cry baby bands all happened later on- taking Sunny Day and milking their sound-
Most importantly it was a semi-punk movement against the state of hardcore- now that it is no longer- the meaning and term is long gone not unlike the idea of punk itself.

I have repect for Christie Front Drive and Mineral...
Really Christie Front Drive was a big push towards this oversaturated music today- that can all boil down to Samiam- a great fucking band- as well.
