Tossing Scones is probably one of the best post Poppy Doodle Punk bands. Whats even more bizarre is that post Poppy Doodle Punk somehow preceeded Poppy Doodle Punk itself. Thats how ahead of it's time it was.

to give a little clearification (and im certainly not an expert, but have wondered this very question myself and done some research), emo actually comes from hardcore music in the later 80s. it was a branch from the typical hardcore toward something softer and more melodic. after that happened, it became a derogatory word for those "pussy" kids that tried to be hardcore but were seen as not so hard.
now, it just seems that it's a bandwagon that the industry has jumped on to get insecure teens to buy music. "hey, you're sad? well there's a bunch more people that are too! buy this music and you can all be disfunctional together!."
hope that helps a little.

here's some history for you randoman.

oh, and that brian eno album is top notch. definitely not emo though. neither is blink or green day. bands like sunny day real estate and lifehouse are probably the closest things to emo that anyone may know.

so emo is emotional punk, does that mean that punk isn't or can't be emotional, and in what way emotional? it's still so unclear to me. and why do we need this category? doesn't emo want to be punk? or doesn't punk want to be emo punk?

fucken labels for everything.
Then sub categorisation, followed by further sub divisions...
just use people's names if you're going to be so anal about pigeon holing.

Do you remember a band called the Decendants? Later became ALL? Good example of borderline hardcore turning emo.
I think labels are a joke hence most of what you have seen me post in this thread. For the most part it is all marketing magic designed to keep pumping freshly engineered genres into the stores...
After all, to keep things "alternative" you have to keep bringing in new stuff, new crowds, etc. lest it becomes mainstream ( which of course it is already).

labels make life a lot easier you know.
so what music do you listen to?
i listen to Pigeon Holing.
who?
Pigeon Holing?
never heard of them. what kind of music is it?
well it's Pigeon Holing.
and?
well, they sound like Pigeon Holing.
see, that doesn't make it easier to communicate. i agree that there are too many labels, some useless and some unclear but they do have a certain function.

the descendents are emo? i like the descendents a lot but i always thought it as just punk rock music. or is that other band emo? lost me there.

blink 182 and greenday are not emo.
saves the day are.

Silly Girl by Decendants is the first song that I think sounds like emo (which I always took as emotional punk).
Labels are ok to a certain extent but they are going a bit out of control lately.
- rabattski0
true randoman.
descendents wise i dunno, it's just that to me the type of lyrics have no real influence on it's genre, rock is rock. i mean if so than that way you should have emo hip hop, emo metal, emo classical, emo country, emo schlager etc. etc.

yeah well you have emo punk like you have gangster rap.
Will Smith Gets Jiggy With it and Biggie hits it... two different things.
- rabattski0
but there's an error in that argument, gangster rap is hip hop, they themselves don't say it's anything else, emo however says that it isn't punk or it's different from punk.
- chossy0
what does emo stand for ? does it stand for no idea what EMOtions are?

If we didn't have labels I wouldn't know if I was eating tomato soup or chicken and mushroom...
I hate mushrooms.

Ok, you have
rap
gangster rap
chip hop and cliq hop
hiphop
trip hop
Dirty South
East coast rap
West coast rap
parappa the rappaand probably a ton of other sub genres Im missing here.
I feel sorry for "electronica" they are making up new names by the hour...
- rabattski0
yeah but they all say that they are hiphop right?
you forgot ship shop btw.

It's one thing to use a label to refrence something and another for the sake of marketing.
I could easily say... Saves the day is melodic punk or something w/out having to create a new label for it.
IDM is a decent example because it covers a vast style of music. in there you have evething from melodic to chaotic and everything in between.
- rabattski0
i think i'm gonna be the first hardcore schlager band.
