Quicksand did fall under that category then- EMO had a varity of sounds- it wasn't just watered down girly shit like these bands today make. More or less it came about at a time when aggressive music rules the All Ages shows and most bands spoke the same rap about straight edge, friends who stabbed you in the back, and unity- all with their CHUG CHUG breakdowns- EMO or "melodic hardcore" came from bands who weren't afraid to sing a bit rather than just bark- sing about other things than typical hardcore lyrics and did their best impression of Iron Maiden guitar riffs... actually playing more than E chords.

The main problem is that mainstream media have labeled everything that is personal music "emo."
Tweens think Dashboard Confessional is emo because of Time magazine and Newsweek articles about Chris Carraba and make him look like the first person to ever write a song about a breakup.
And it's crap and so is his music, same song written over and over and over.People forget too easily that people like Bach, Beethoven, Verdi, etc. wrote music that came from the depths of their soul, and if we really want to get down to it, what they did was more emotional than 99% of the crap being tagged emo nowadays.

The term EMO comes from a Maxium Rock-n-Roll interview with "Embrace", a DC band on Discord records featuring Ian MacKaye from Minor Threat, Fugazi, ..etc.
They asked how he would describe the sound of Embrace's music- Ian responded that it was "more than punk, more emotional than hardcore... emotional hardcore."
Dag Nasty and Rites of Spring started using the term- and some yahoo down the line termed it "EMO" and thus the end as we know it.

See, your definition is what I like puter. It keeps the sound of the music to a distinct category for the most part.
But when EVERYTHING starts being called emo, people lost sight of the fact that music can just be music, no labels, music about life and happiness and depression and troubles and love and hate.
You don't need to be an "emo" band to be personal and honest.

yes, that's probably why i believe many bands (ie. Dashboard, Death Cab, Taking Back Sunday, Weezer) are emo.

listen to rites of spring, old planes mistaken for stars, at the drive-in, mineral and early jimmy eat world.
that gives you a general idea of what emo really was.
i don't think it exists much anymore. it wasn't really supposed to ever exist, it's just hardcore with heart. haha heartcore.
