lvl_13, two things that you are wrong about.
Mac are not exspensive compared to Dells or any top line PC. If you configure a Dell to the spects of a Mac you will find that they are equally price. Sometimes the Dell comes out to be more.
As for Flash, its a little slower but on a G4 you can barely tell and on a G5 you dont notice anything. Thats Macromedias fault anyways, they suck at apps.
Besides, you will be running OSX and not Winblows which makes it worth it right there.

After not finding my desired über-machine, I 'settled' for a Sony Vaio (s2xp) earlier this year and I must admit, I'm very happy with it..
..nice screen, light, small footprint, well-designed - it doesn't even trip up when I'm multitasking a 1gb PSD, websurfing and Illustrator-ing.
The only thing I don't like is the lack of a Numerical Pad.. but that's hardly it's fault!
My only experience with Toshibas is the BIG FUCKER my friend has - which looks clunky Plebian consumer-item - not the honed-workhouse my designer-aesthetic demands... :)
(if you care, my über-machine would've been from http://www.Savrow.co.uk)

A laptop with wireless is the best invention since the Automobile.
I like Dell, Alienware*, HP, and Sony for PC laptops
*Alienware makes the most powerful laptops BUT they weigh something like 10 pounds.

Mac vs PC?
Drop it. No one cares - he's buying a PC laptop because he wants to, no amount of irksome justification will change that, so please - just drop it.
It's tired, stale, dull, boring and ... just plain fucking irritating.

What have we become? Huh? What i ask you? Lets talk design like they did in the good ol days!
c'mon.... c'mon.....

thanks all! just got back on...
a lot of people mentioned viaos it seems...one thing about the one's i was looking at, there is only one slot open for ram (because the other slot is sodered to the motherboard) which is a concern to me. other than that they seem solid.
a few mentioned alienware and the like. powerful as hell but the terrible battery life and the fact that they weigh over 10 pounds basically makes these machines the exact opposite of what i really need.
several mentioned dell. i've heard really bad things and really good things so i guess i will dig deeper in that.
as for some of the high end laptops suggested. most are out of my price range, but would be damn nice : )
any other opinions / suggestions? this is a really big help. thanks guys!
super special thanks to Nairm : )

ibm rarely has problems.....the new sizes for the t4* line are smaller then big laptops and bigger then the sony...HP sucks and now that they are partnered with Compaq....its even worse and their tech support blows....I had to send them my lap when I had a paq and I didnt have it for 4 months....
you never hear anyone really complain about IBM....I just bought an older one ...... for like $500 and the think works well with all that I try to do with it.....
I dont mind a little less power cause I know I spent less but I used a friends new one and the thing blazes..... just make sure the screen res goes up to at least 1280x1024 thats the only prob.....the older models only go up to 1024x768

yeah i've had a hard time finding a good resolutionvs. cost factor.
i would probably like a widescreen veiw but not a huge deal. what are the ibm cost looking like these days? comparable to others? i guess i think of ibm as a really old washed up company behind the times : \
i know, i know....give me some links liquid if you got a sec. thanks

no worries!
both memory modules in my vaio appear to be changable.

I went from a light weight Sony Vaio to an Alienware Area 51. The weight increase really bothered me. For about two days. After that, the 3 lb difference was little noticed when compared against the higher resolution scree, blazing speed, extra ports, etc. When I'm working at my desk, I plug in a second 21" monitor into the laptop and work with the two screens. Great for Flash: script window on the laptop, stage on the monitor. One warning, tho. If you do a lot of desktop publishign or web design, the color shift from the laptop screen to a standard monitor can kill ya. It's always good to check it on a monitor before shipping.

Nairn,
First off no one was talking to you so mind you business. No reason to be a jerk.
Second, I trying to convince him to buy a Mac. He can do whatever he wants. I was just correcting the myths that seem to fly around the PC community.
Get off your high horse buddy, no one cares and next time try not to be such a jerkoff.

Contrary to what everyone's been saying here, I've got a slightly higher end Toshiba Satellite than the one you linked to and it's actually worked out great for me. True, it's a slight workout to carry around, but that's more than made up by the super wide screen and great display which is the critical factor for me. No performance complaints and it's still going strong after a year (and I bought it refurbished). I had a Thinkpad before that, and honestly, I would not get a Thinkpad for design work. True, they are very durable but mine went to pot completely after a few years (pretty much like any other machine that gets used heavily). No matter what machine you get, I think it's always a good idea to upgrade often, every year if possible - that way you can sell your machine for close to what you bought it for, and still get a better model.
- lvl_130
hmmm, interesting nairm. it may have been specific to the one i was looking at, but the tech made it seem that all the vaios were like that.
yeah ukit, you bring up some valid points about upgrade. it's good to hear you had a pos. exp. with your toshiba.. thanks again all.

Well spank my ass and call me Mandy! You got me turned on there, buddy!
I await our next encounter with delicious trepidation!

ps. you're right - no one cares. about mac or pc debates, that is.
'tard.

Sorry to join in on all the Toshiba bashing but I would really recommend going with something else... anything else. From personal experience: they are unreliable (power issues, cheap ram, display problems), their customer support is terrible, and they come loaded with a mess of proprietary software that slows them down to mud and takes a month just to get it all off.
I use macs now (sorry to bring that up), but have friends in my studio that all swear by IBM's products. I would check them out.

I'd also look into IBMs Thinkpad range.
They make nice Laptops
