all of the previous countries / cities you just mentioned had greater emblems. each one can be immediately recognized... maybe thats where the confusion and area where people feel let down, because even local citizens of vancouver dont understand what it is at first. and besides that, is it really a big part of our heritage or is it being forced on us with out our will. to me it almost feels like we are begging for the world to know something specific of our culture and heritage that does not have a lot of significance. maybe they should have had the first round as concepts then went back in, or if they did re treat it, i think it lacks

This awesom thread reminds me of the discussion we used to have back in the day
It' jsut so refreshing to listen to so many smart comments and ideas from people

This is also a good concept because it will be a symbol canadian everywhere can make in solidarity for the games. I have the feeling these little guys will be springing up all over the country come 2010.
This logo is pretty conceptually strong. Its the forms themselves that feel too rudimentary and haphazardly placed.
Go Canada GO!

Perhaps if you had added some arms and legs Greg to your logo and given it a 'cheeky' name yours would have been chosen?

Serious face: I think that the average person responds in a more positive manner to something like the chosen logo than say something like Gregs [xrtion, not the high street bread shop]. People see more 'value' in something like the chosen logo, how many times have you shown someone a design with just a bit of type on and they've gone 'I could have done that'? Whereby something like the character people develop some kind of empathy to it, almost 'adopting' the 'mascot'.

I liked it to start with, and like it the more I look at it. Not too keen on the typography though, but I agree with james that it's the best out of all those posted...

it seems a lot easier to adopt than the others too... many of them are too conscious of the styling rathe than an idea...
...and imagine the uproar if the winning design was a maple leaf

I think people here have a specific attitude towards olympic games logos, mainly because a lot of designers are quite fond of the old 'swiss' logos.
But they were made in a different time, the world has changed a bit since then. The chosen logo represent the ethos of the olympics much more thatn the proposed ones in this thread that reflect more a 'design olympics' theme instead of a athletics/sports one.
And regarding comments about it looking childish, one of my tutors once told me "learn to draw like a child and everyone will love you"
My two cents (€, not £)

saddly the logo works. I saw many that I personaly liked more, but hey it's Canada, the kids will love it...
or will they? Only time will tell...

from SUN:
"It's a good concept, but it doesn't work," said Jeff Harrison, associate creative director with Vancouver-based advertising firm Rethink Communications.
"I can't see something being so stable representing energy and bringing it to life," he said, adding he is also not certain people from outside Canada will understand what the symbol is meant to represent.
"It seems to be a bit of a let down for me," he said shortly after leaving the show.

One of Ilanaaq's most charming additions - its mouth - was added as a last minute touch when Rivera MacGregor decided it needed a little something more to bring it to life. At that moment, “it immediately gained the friendly, open-armed attitude that represents all Canadians.”
that explains why it doesnt work, last minute after thought

i think it's been subject to many last minute afterthoughts.. one of the more prominent afterthoughts being: make it bigger, make it bigger!wtf?

(Apr 25 05, 04:04)Excellent points there TBOA..
i also wonder if i was liking Greg's submission as a designer.
I mean how much are we designer still able to value solutions that are perhaps stronger in concept but in a way (esp. to swiss standards) less esthetic??
- vburo0
"i also wonder if i was liking Greg's submission as a designer.
"i meant to add: ..instead of a regular spectator/visitor of the olympics..
still the idea this logo contains more marketing then design input bothers me slightly...
(please keep this discussion alive)..
