vburo, you might be correct.
i think the bottom line is what a few others said about them having to repeat the meaning of the logo over and over since nobody will get it.
but really, i'm just trying to cover my ass in case i'm misunderstanding you... ;p

" liked xrtions but the maple leave is also over used and doesn't really speak about the people of our Nation."
the heart of the maple leaf was made up of the olympic rings, which symbolize the 5 contients. canada is a melting pot, made up of people from all over this world.
with the heart of the maple leaf (which is the symbol for canada) being made up of the 5 contients, i think this does reflect our great nation quite well...but then again, i am totally biased :D

well, canada is a multicultural as oppose to a melting pot, but the point is still valid

hmm, the news right now is saying that the new logo is getting very bad reviews all around.
Everyone seems to think it doesn't have anything to do with Vancouver and looks like Gumby. I agree.

i haven't read the 85 prev posts, so this may be redundant..
but being a vancouverite born and raised its kinda disappointing the logo has nothing to do with BC and its local culture.
a character reflecting west coast native (ie Haida) styles would have been much more appropriate.

The true test of this emblem would have to be in it's execution throughout the games themselves. Under more flat circumstances, with a generous amount of breathing space around the mark, I think it will look quite nice - as did the Athens emblem last summer in many situations. Once the CBC has whisping 3D light and glistening extrusions in perspective, it may become a tad sour.
I really like what the mark itself stands for: "Over time, the inukshuk has become a symbol of hope and friendship, an eternal expression of the hospitality of a nation that warmly welcomes the people of the world with open arms every day."
The above holds true to the 3 things in which the mark represents: Vancouver, Canada and the Olympics.
Just the sole fact that it has intrigued me enough to want to know what it means says a lot, in my opinion - because it's not only educational to the rest of the world, but even to Canadians.
Now if we could take off our "Too Cool" caps for a second and realize that although it may not be composed of the european forms that we all know and love, that it will certainly have something to say to the WORLD (which includes children!).

looks like a big pile of crap to me
but them Werk boys both did a mighty fine job on their logos, wish they would have picked one of them.. maybe next time eh!

some good points, and i agree with what it stands for. probably one of the reasons it had been chosen was for the educational value. friendly as the mark is, it does leave the viewer asking more questions, and for the story to be told, and the culture of what vancouver is about and the history behind it. cept it doesnt change the fact that people will think we are a bunch of neandertals bulding rock and petrified wood people on a beach

alex raised some great points. the concept of the emblem is great, not knocking that at all.
this emblem does leave the viewer asking more questions, but the question is, will this emblem actually inspire people to find out the meaning behind it?for example, im sure the sydney 2000 and barcelona 1992 emblems had deeper meanings, but how many people were inspired find out what they meant?
great discussion here guys.

in order for them emblem to be successful, i think it has to have a strong aesthetic appeal, which is almost as important that the concept behind it. like munich '72 or montreal '76.
- Xrtions0
should read "as important as the concept behind it"
