here's a gimmick, the actors get paid at the end of the movie and everybody fades into obscurity

**Don't read if you have not seen the movie!!****
Greedo,
Interesting point about the hardware, wood, etc.
As for there being more than seven famalies, I think maybe they got more people to go with them. That photo from the black box was probably early 70s, late sixties? At the end, when the young guy goes to the guard shack, I got the feeling that the older guard who was there (Shyamalan cameo) said the things he did because he knew those people were in there. Like it was some kind of social experiment. What he said about dealing with a plan flying over it-why would that be a big deal over a forest preserve?
Also, their fires, the smoke from the village, wouldn't outsiders see that and wonder where it was coming from? Or were they so far within the forest that you could be totally isolated and hidden?
I loved the movie, and I like that I left the theater thinking about the things above.

what the older guard said was that he had a lot of troulbe explaining to a reporter why they paid the federal gov't a lot of money to reroute planes around the preserve. as for the fires, the blind girl had to walk a few miles to get to the fence, so with dense woods, you wouldn't be able to see any fires unless there were mountains nearby.
if more people came to the village with them, how come they weren't on the elders' council?
they were dressed too well to be completely cuf off from the world. yes, they did have sheep, but they weren't wearing just wool. plus, where did the oil or pitch come from to keep those thousands of torches lit every night? how did the village idiot manage to put on that very complicated looking costume?
or signs:
how come space aliens can travel billions of miles across the galaxy/universe, make a complicated system of waypoints from the sky, but are completely naked and act like dumb animals? why land on a planet that's 4/5ths water if water kills you?
he should just make movies, i bet he'd be a great director without the surprise twist. pretty much the entire movie hinges upon your reaction to the twist, and if that's not believable, the entire movie fails.

You're a twit if you argue pragmatism with Shyamalan's movies.

he sounds like a real republican

**Also, don't read if you haven't seen the movie!!**
The hardware, wood, glass and everything else came from "The Towns". They didn't grow from that area they were living. Everyone knew they had come from "The Towns". More than likely they had made trips back to "The Towns" in the past to gather supplies. An elder likely made that trip.
They didn't want planes flying over because everyone would see these houses and stuff in the middle of this huge forest area. Then people would get curious.
I guarantee that 90% of the audience that I saw the movie with didn't get the movie one bit. They didn't pick up on the name on the side of the Jeep or on the guys hat. They also probably didn't pick up on the reason for sending the blind girl. I'll let you marinate on that one.
For anyone who calls this movie predictable or flat, I'm calling bulls**t.
For anyone who says that Shyamalan's got a gimmick going and that he should stop making movies with imaginative endings, then its obvious you should've spent your money on Catwoman.

i like his movies, i just think he's reaching more and more to come up with a twist ending. no, i didn't predict the ending of it, i just found that one a bit hard to swallow, much like the naked alien vs water bit.
i love the way he builds up suspense and sets up shots.as for the village:
they didn't send the girl out alone..there were two guys with her that turned back by themselves. The elders didn't get supplies because 'they took the oath', otherwise they could've just gone themselves and kept their little secret.also, somebody explain the color symbolism to me...why was red the bad color? was it because all the elders had somebody close to them offed? and why was ochre the good color?

dont know how much anyone should value fernando's opinion, he liked cabin fever!
- mg330
**Spoiling!!**
They came from towns and red likely meant blood, evil, bad acts towards another person. They built up the fear of it in the minds of the people in the town, the young kids, as part of their "experiment."
I wish we had a better timeline, and knew the ages of the young people better. I'd like to know how many were born there on the village, and instantly brought into the way of life. Some of the kids may have been brought there and indoctrinated into that way of life, you think?
Certainly the success of the village is based on fear of what's beyond-the outside world and the elders want a life free of the dangers of towns, modern life, etc.
Something like this could succeed as long as everyone not in on the plan didn't know any better.

just seen it, in conclusion:
this film is WANK.
some nice cinematography but what should have been an interesting idea was overlooked and the suspense (if you can call it that) build up was far too drawn out and there were far too many 'happy accidents'
totally dissapointing, the trailer was good though.
Once again: WANK.

I didn't see it but my brother told me the ending ... i thought the ending was interesting. The live in the modern worlsd and they don't know cause the grown ups tell them there are monsters. HAH. but yeah eveyone is saying its weak.
- rasko40
the ending was where it started to get interesting, for like 2 minutes and that was all they made of it, they could have totally made some interesting parallels but (hollywood) chose not to and to stick to keeping it a dull scare (well; mildly worrying) flick.

MichaelW you fuckin muppet.
Dont talk about major plot twists without warning.
Fuck.

I watched it last week and really enjoyed it. Over teh past couple of years Joaquim Phoenix has become my favorite actor.

they ripped the whole "vertical red slash through caps serif type" thing from the movie se7en. they used the same typeface and everything.
and it's like their whole ad campaign. sad.
- chall50
I think red was made the bad colour cos nearing the path there were those red berries so maybe the elders made red the bad colour so if someone ventured in to the woods and nearly got to the path they would think it was. like. really dangerous cos there was so much red around and turn back just before they reached the path
- rasko40
yes, then ochre could be the safe colour as it is most prominent in the safety of the village, ie; the scrubby grass
