**Spoiling!!**
They came from towns and red likely meant blood, evil, bad acts towards another person. They built up the fear of it in the minds of the people in the town, the young kids, as part of their "experiment."
I wish we had a better timeline, and knew the ages of the young people better. I'd like to know how many were born there on the village, and instantly brought into the way of life. Some of the kids may have been brought there and indoctrinated into that way of life, you think?
Certainly the success of the village is based on fear of what's beyond-the outside world and the elders want a life free of the dangers of towns, modern life, etc.
Something like this could succeed as long as everyone not in on the plan didn't know any better.
