I got a Gary Fisher for my birthday..!
It rocks..! I'm sure it's undfer 400$ (CA), front shock, aluminum frame, cool speed switcher, up to 21 speed..! very light..!
I recommend-it... What do I know, I'm just a Grafik Designer..! and a satisfied mountain bike owner.

Mid Range -
I am guessing that 'Mid Range' means like $1000-1800 or so?
I'd buy used, almost always.
What I would buy (and I am in the market for a similar bike) is:
1. Trek 9.9 or 9.8 - carbon fiber so it is light and stiff, but absorbs the bumps
Components are the best. I've seen them for as little as $1200 and as high as $2500 in 'as new' or 'very good'
2. Litespeed Pisgah - I like titanium, not as light as the Trek, but resilient. You won't get the parts as with the Trek, but no one builds these with bad stuff. Same price variation.
3. Specialized M5 - Aluminum, so it'll be really stiff, but light. Great parts. Harder to find, but same price.
4. You might be able to find others, like Merlins (a little more), better Litespeeds, something like Independent Fabrications, Ibis, Ventana, or Santa Cruz, but they are rarer. You might also consider the Trek STP line (400 or 300) that is the partial suspension (with about 1.5" of travel and no pivots), you can find them for around the same price. I'd go full suspension if you are spending 1800 or more.

I own a Brodie Evolution and love it!...more of freeride bike than what you're looking for.

:(
i never learned how to ride a bike.
i suck

Go with Jamis.
The frame is great and they give you high quality parts at competive rates.
I suggest the Dakota AL. If you get last years model new you'll get a $1,000 bike for about $800.
Don't pay less than around $600 or so if you plan on riding much or you'll just be buying a new one by years end.

take it from me - i just picked up an oryx desert dueller 99 for $1500 and its done right up. i love it.
where do you live?

I remember when Brodie made first class hardtails. I'd guess they still make one? That'd cost you, though, to build it up, unless you could find a used one.
I've never ridden one, but Rocky Mountains look decent for Canadian bikes.
If you are looking at bikes in the $1500 + range, learn about the differneces between the mass produced (Trek, Specialized, Jamis, RM) and the handbuilt/customs (Brodie, maybe Litespeed, Merlin, Ventana).
I've got an old Fat Chance. I love her, but it's hard to believe everyone considers it a 'retro bike'. Good, old fashioned steel.

get fitted for some gear while you are at it.

i don't know how difficult it is to import a Dutch bike in Canada, but a handbuilt SANTOS [SCC02] is the best hardtail bike there is (i have one...)
with:- shimano XTR, 9 speed
- HS33 Magura breaks
- Magura O24U fork, 80 mm travel
- 9,5 kilo (!)
- 2000 Euro (= +/- 1900 USD)pictures:

http://www.santos-bikes.nl/show_…important: dont buy disk breaks. only Magura HS33 hydraulic. less maintenance, better performance etc etc.

mbr: brodie now sells fully complete bikes and frames...i know they used to only sell frames.
they're hardtails still kick ass!...that's what i'm on...18" Evolution...total freeride machine, 3" tires, 5" travel fork, full disc and flat pedals....nice geometry to the frame...head tube has just the right rake to it.
i live in whistler and mostly ride the trails with northshore stlyle obstacles...fallen trees, man made shit and natural...and i'f i'm not doing that i'm just blasting down the "a-line" trail or the biker-x up in the whistler bike park.

2cent, you have 3 inch tires?!
please show me a picture...

i wouldn't say to stay away from disc all together...you are right with the set-up and maintenace being alot easier with the magura hydros...used to own a set of HS11.
but i would argue that they're better performance wise...i think its a matter of opinion and what style of riding you do...i personally wouldn't go back, i love my discs even if they're a bitch to work on!

will take pic at home tonight...they're great for grip but when i'm bombing down the hill my chain sometimes sucks in between my frame and tire...nothing to really concern me...just makes an awful noise and wears the tire quicker.
- stewart0
some friends have had terrible experiences with discs. quick wear out, and terribly squeaking noise.

can't find the site for them...called rokko...pretty sure they're small company that focuses on dh/freeride.
its very close to the maxxis high roller...only the high roller biggest size is 2.7
you really don't need the big tires...i only have them because where i ride tends to be wet a lot so i need all the grip i can get.

You guys must be doing the crazy shit to have tires like that! They must weigh a pound each!
I am too old to do anything besides cross country (already broke my shoulder once), and am really not skilled enough to do the freeride acrobatics. The new XTR disks look pretty sweet. Nice and light, and they look nice too!
My tires are more along the lines of 1.9"-2.1" :-|
