Truth surrounds you like the ocean surrounds the fish. The fish may not be aware, can't be aware because the fish is born in the ocean, has always lived in the ocean, is part of the ocean as any wave is part of the ocean.
Once the fish becomes aware of the ocean, the fish is enlightened.

When I am depressed, I think about what is bothering me. Most of the time it's either work or money. Then I think of the different ways I can change or improve my situation, like trying to get a new job, and identify the steps I need to accomplish that. And focus my energy on fulfilling that goal.
I know there are different situations that brings depression, if you or your friend are depressed, the only way to work it out is identifying the source of depression. You need to talk to that person or talk it through and then help find a solution.
Best of luck

it's impossible to be depressed when you take action.
I read that somewhere- it's worked for me.

When I was depressed and about to kill myself - I had an epiphany. That was the most creative night of my life. It was like a flood. The result was my site Closure.
Hang in there :)

I've found that taking some 5-Hydroxytryptophan (legal, try drug/health shops, it might be called 5-HTP) helps, as it encourages the generation of serotonin. You might also find St. John's Wort useful too (also legal, try same shops).
That's the medical side out of the way. Being a Buddhist has helped me with the rest. I'm no 'religion nut', but the philosophy and learning how to control your mind and feelings has really helped.
Other than that, the best way is to just jump in and get on with what you want to do. It's hard making the first step, but then it feels good if you're enjoying what you're working on.

"sunlight really is suposed to produce a chemical reaction with your skin that produces Vitamin D (i think that is the one) that increases your brains seratonin levels. (dont ask me the science of it, that is just what my old health professor taught me. i hated him)"
yup thats true.
i notice how i change when im consistently going to the beach on the summer and now on the winter.
i get depressed by nature, but i have learned how to fight that by taking advantage of the summer sun, and going out. and in the winter when its sunny and warm i go for long walks downtown or hang out with friends.thats the best way to fight depression, not everybody is able to hipnotize them selves to believe that if they think theyre happy they will be happy, and medication is the last option.
so using the sun who is right up there is the best medicine.
but its also good to try to be creative anytime you can, letting your emotion reflect on your work makes your work worth more.

Agree with Neeko. It's probably a bit sad, but I feel the most creative AND productive when I'm sad, angry or depressed. I just don't give a damn about creating beautiful things when things are peachy in my life. That's really gotta change, cause I can't be forced to feel creatively inhibited if I'm in a good mood.. hmm. Oh well.
Sad music is the best creative fuel.

The physiological advice about sunlight, and exercize is proven to be true. While you are still depressed think of the great depressed artists: Van Gogh, Tchaikovsky, El, Greco, Robert Johnson, Hendrix, Lennon, Trent Reznor, Cobain, Pee Wee Herman.
Try to do something or watch something that is incredibly silly. Sometimes, the dumbest, simplest things in life will bring you around. Watch how children quickly change their moods when they're playing in groups.
Forget stupid chocolate. You don't want to be a big fatty and you don't want your skin to break out.

I had my share of depression now too...and I feel it's so easy to do nothing, and that just make it worse..personaly I have to fight tog et out of it, I need to do something, I try to surrond my self with people that not feel sorry for me, but aht help me to do something to get out of it...but it's the hardest thing...

all your words were great, kids... thanks. I admit that I was talking about me more than my depressed friends...
... this has been on-going for so long.
A couple of things I will definetly try is the sunlight and the long walks...oh and the 5-dht and the st. johns wart are supposed to work too... heard that somewhere--I think it was my dad.Anyhow--thanks for everything. I feel loved in here today!

Just be careful what you mix the St. John's wart with.
Glad to hear that you are encouraged.

i agree with neeko...
exercise is the way...you don't have to lift wheights or anything, 30 minutes of fast walking as often as possible... there are no fast ways out of it...sorry...

What you need is a hardy dose of seeing other people that are less fortunate. Head to any 3rd world country for at least 3 years and you will never feel depressed about yourself and your family again, no matter what. You probably have a home/apt. and food and clothes. Many people don't, you will see yourself in a whole new light. The funnies thing is that during my experiences in 3rd world countries, I've come to realize that the people we 1st world countries feel sorry for are actually 10 times happier than we are. Not trying to poke you man, but if you see the World in a different light it can be healthy for you. Good Luck ;)
