I've had my share of it... and I'm watching others deal with it right now. It's really damaging to one's work and is an inhibitor of creativity.
Any suggestions on how to deal w/depression? Especially when you need to focus and be creative? Any ideas on how to pull that creativity out of you when you're depressed?

Paxil?
No, in all seriousness... try focusing on others and how to do something special for them. Selfless thinking is the key. Do something, within your means, that is charitable.

Drop everything an travel to a foreign country. Forget who you are, and focus on who you want to be. And everything will fall into place.
This loaf of bullshit just cost you 15.99$ I accept paypal.

Oh, and get outside as much as possible... even if you don't feel like it.
Helps with the design inspiration factor as well.

well, i cant say too much on the subject in a public forum without incriminating myself.
pick up a copy of Tao Te Ching by Lao Tsu. read it and it will give you some peace. if you cant find it, i might even send you my copy. =)
other than that, i will say that i have not found legal way to do what you ask.
alcohol is a bad idea, hard drugs are a bad idea, but weed will dull your emotional pain and let you still be creative. but, it affects everyone differently, some people cant work on it while others work great while under the influence.

Oh, and read Matthew Ch. 6 in the Bible... helps.

I get depressed easily and often. I find the best thing to do is to ignore it and go ahead anyway. Make plans for stuff. If you're jobless give yourself a project with deadlines and stuff like you were still working.
Or with people. If I think someone is avoiding me, I'll take that first step and be nice anyway. If they're mean, well they can eat a dick. :) But most of the times, you'll find it's just a misconception in your own head. It really doesn't matter.

good call frow:
matt. 6:34 (not the actual quote... but the just of it):
don't worry about tomorrow for today has it's own issues... take life one day at a time.

Step away from the computer. When I'm depressed and just sit in front of those positive ions, it just gets worse.
Someone...maybe Dr. Phil (!)...said when you are feeling empty, go give to someone else. It works.
Yeah, so I've watched Dr. Phil...what of it?! :)

Yea, bizzy... that's an encouraging passage.

Just bottle it up in a little ball and start compressing it to the point of a diamond. Then go for a walk and talk to yourself about the issues loud enough that others know to get out of your way. On a more serious note, I do get depressed but how I cope with it is by going for a very long walk everyday. Exercise seriously reduces depression. It allows your brain to produced seritonin to counterbalance depression.
You don't need to be an athlete or anything, just go for a brisk walk for about 20-40 minutes. This could mean walking to the store or taking a trip to the downtown. Grab yourself a cup of tea or coffee to keep your hands warm. I swear that this works.

Get some UV rays. It may be SAD (seasonal affective disorder) where your body is reacting aversely to the lack of natural light. They sell UV light bulbs that are supposed to simulate the light of the sun. Stay out of the dark.

sunlight really is suposed to produce a chemical reaction with your skin that produces Vitamin D (i think that is the one) that increases your brains seratonin levels. (dont ask me the science of it, that is just what my old health professor taught me. i hated him)

I find that sometimes you can turn mild depression into creativity. Some good writing and music can definitely come out of depression. It can even help design. I sometimes find it hard to work if I'm really happy.
Everyone's already touched on all my depression breakers though. Excercise and the outdoors are the big ones. Not only do you get the nice seretonin release from excercise, but it helps you focus, and i always find it makes me look towards the future and changing, rather than dwelling on all the shit bringing me down.
and when all else fails turn to some good ol' healthy non addictive escapism. I think reading is the best... far more engaging than movies.

spot on, bio. It's vitamin D.

I second the idea of going for a walk. It's always been my way of dealing with crap - it clears my head. The elements of everyday life seem to matter less when you're strollin' through the forest..

Sure thing, dude. Builds character. :^)
