When I am depressed, I think about what is bothering me. Most of the time it's either work or money. Then I think of the different ways I can change or improve my situation, like trying to get a new job, and identify the steps I need to accomplish that. And focus my energy on fulfilling that goal.
I know there are different situations that brings depression, if you or your friend are depressed, the only way to work it out is identifying the source of depression. You need to talk to that person or talk it through and then help find a solution.
