I've found that taking some 5-Hydroxytryptophan (legal, try drug/health shops, it might be called 5-HTP) helps, as it encourages the generation of serotonin. You might also find St. John's Wort useful too (also legal, try same shops).
That's the medical side out of the way. Being a Buddhist has helped me with the rest. I'm no 'religion nut', but the philosophy and learning how to control your mind and feelings has really helped.
Other than that, the best way is to just jump in and get on with what you want to do. It's hard making the first step, but then it feels good if you're enjoying what you're working on.
