There's so much to actually love about this film I can't believe some of the bitching.
Rey was a tremendous character. Ridley did a fantastic job. I bought into her 100%. Can't wait to watch her progress into a total badass. I expect her story will mirror luke's a little and I'm fine with that. She'll have a more believable reason to struggle with her training because she literally ask for the responsibility that I think we can expect Luke to thrust onto her. Will someone lose a hand? Probably. It's a trope I'm ok with because the actress is killing it and that's fun to watch.
Poe was really fantastic as well. A fitting addition to the films. He really helped endear Fin to the audience when there's not much reason to like his character. We get to see Fin aspiring to someone. It was a pleasurable character arc that made for great moments in the film.
The StarKiller base I could care less about. I didn't feel like they spent a whole lot of time on it anyway. It was more or less a convenient plot device that served as a backdrop to a more personal story. Just like expository military speech that summed up galactic politics instead of the drawn out parliamentary procedural we got in the prequels.
Abrams gave the film a fantastic look and really championed artful film making. The only aspect I thought was weak Han's smuggler ship with the awful CG monsters. Would have been a better scene if it was more like the hidden creatures of the compactor scenes - but it's a Disney flick so what would you expect?
There are certainly some things to pick at. Rylo Ken is a bit disappointing, but I'm still interested in his story. It's way more fun to be excited about what was good about the film. I lowered my expectations going in and found I was rewarded with something that wasn't as awful as Star Trek into Darkness which should have felt like the Hunt for Red October and not some dorky nostalgia trip.

- Rey was an awful actor. Utterly awkward and unbelievable.set

- She's such a innocent lovable character. Representing hope I would say. And fins represents redemption. To right the wrong his side did.pango

^ yeah i see people nitpicking the shit out of it and complaining about realism and whatever but they gloss over the fact that it's a space fantasy with a fucking hairy bear man driving a spaceship, a talking trashcan and a group of wizards whose magic is fueled by being pissy about things. if people would just relax a bit they'd enjoy it a whole lot more :)

Finally saw it. I really, really wanted to just enjoy this film but my mind wouldn't stop wandering. There were some very good parts that seemed to carry the spirit of what Lucas had originally created but unfortunately I have to agree with many of the complaints :(
A couple random of my own that I haven't seen mentioned:
first was this just some unused character asset from the prequel trilogy?
Seemed the most removed from the original SW universe.second, darth solo, or whatever his name was was too emo and felt like some CW interpretation of a star wars villain. And that horrible voice. Seriously movies need to stop it with this. Batman and Bane gave us our fill..
third, i felt too much of what seemed like ridley scott influence with grand supreme leader what'shisface. just didn't feel like star wars to me
static1.squarespace.com/static/5...finally, this entire scene here was just horrible and should have been edited out.
I know, it's silly to complain about a movie like star wars. if most people liked it i guess that's all that matters but i can't help wonder just how much better it could have been with better pacing, editing, and a bit more thought with the story and a few of the characters.
- yep what I thoughtfadein11
- anyone who use the word "emo" seems to just be parroting from other internet criticsinteliboy
- true, inteliboy, however I can't help the word came to mind several times during the movie anymore than any of the other critics could. fair point nonetheless.SteveJobs

Just saw it, fucking amazing. Super nostalgic, was teary eyed in about 5 different scenes, it was a swashbuckling good time.
I was also aware of the plot devices being rehashes from the previous films but it's ok, it needed to feel familiar, he needed to right the ship in this one and he did it in spades. I think this one was more of a set up of what's to come, the real meat of the new ones will be next, JJ's empire strikes back if you will.
- also watched it with my 7yo and he was giddy throughout and afterwards. we watched star wars together to get him up to speed and he thought it was cheesy_niko
- he loved empire and he loved this so I'm more than happy._niko
- also forgot to mention how funny it was, brought a very human element to the movie something lucas' versions (esp 123) sorely lacked_niko
- +1 to this review! Had the same feeling. Perfect setup to the stuff that is coming.inv
- I need to see again. I didn't see an amazing film.fadein11

George Lucas Explains Why He Doesn’t Want to Direct ‘Star Wars’ Movies Anymore
When George Lucas had completed the initial Star Wars trilogy, he maintained that the franchise actually consisted of three trilogies in total: another that tells the story of what happened before Episode IV and a final series that continued the Luke/Leia story after Episode VI. He was able to realize the first continuation a couple of decades after Return of the Jedi, but then maybe not so surprisingly retreated from the world of directing for a bit. Indeed, the response to the prequels was not kind, and so Lucas focused his efforts on producing films like Red Tails and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

- THX 1138 is a masterpiece. Thats what he should do.Ben99
- Its like he said, everyone has an expectation of what his movies should be... when he made those classics there was no expectation and he created historic filmssofakingback
- As designers I think we can relate to this, you can't create something amazing and revolutionary when a fucking suit is giving you the direction.sofakingback
- THX 1138 was underwhelming as well. Wouldn't make my top 20 sci-fi movies.fadein11
- He only directed A New Hope in the first trilogy...zarkonite

I'm doing Christmas shopping for my 6 year old and looking at all the new Star Wars toys... and they suck!
Almost 40 years ago the toys were battery operated with sounds, lights and moving parts. The Tie Fighters had sounds and LED lights for the blasters. The Y wings had sounds and rotating canopy turrets. The AT-AT had light up and pulsing cannons. The Sand Crawler was remote controlled.
Now they only have... spring loaded missiles... for things that don't even have missiles.

- loved my 70s/80s SW toys.fadein11
- Basic electronics are cheaper and more accessible than ever. An LED or two would add, I'll wager, less than $0.25 to the product.ETM
- I guess the Millennium Falcon has some cool electronics, but I would hope so at about $150.ETM
- And you could actually have sex with the Princess Leia toys right ETM!kona
- Or the Millennium Falcom. Whichever floated your boat. Also, in my day I had to walk uphill to school! And I had to wear tube socks!kona
