I just watched Empire Strikes Back last night to see how it holds up and to start gettin caught up before I see this. Guys. Please remember that the originals were also pretty corny sci fi flicks. So much of the standard everyone is holding them up to is based on the way imaginations grew them into over the years.
I haven't seen the new one yet but if it's as fun as the crazy adventures in Empire, has some laughably lame sword fighting and one liners, and has a fucking green stoner muppet rummaging through food and chuckling, I'm all in.

I am not sure why it's a mystery they would literally retread the successful ground A New Hope already tread. They want to setup the series for a new generation of fans, but also please the old. What better way than repackage what already worked? It's the story of the whole movie industry.
Hopefully they'll break out from the mould in the next two, but they needed a familiar, if contrived, launch pad after the doubts cast by the prequels. I don't blame them. A little disappointed, but my 6 year old son enjoyed it and that's who will be their biggest overall consumer, for the next 10+ years.

I think this is either going to be star wars painted with the cliched Hollywood brush (running from explosions, over-acted drama, cringe-inducing one-liners, etc), or it will be the stuff every one of THIS era's Hollywood big-budget movies aspires to - a masterclass in blockbuster one-upmanship.
What I do NOT think it will be is the tender, light-hearted, endearing, and uninhibited tale that was seemingly only capable of being delivered back in the 70's and 80's. I don't know if it's really significant to this film but I do wonder sometimes if, apart from the iconic star wars world and special effects, that's the elusive detail that made the originals so special.
- JJ Abrams' Star Trek films prove he's very good at pacing action, story and humour, so i'm hopeful it will be more captivating than the average Hollywood junk.spl33nidoru

Btw after watching it again last night, knowing how much in this movie echoes the original trilogy, Im pretty certain Maz Kanata is either a part of Yodas race, or directly related to him.
Like Im pretty sure in episode 8 she is going to take that hat off and her big floppy yodas ears are going to pop out, and shes going to get in a lightsaber fight with some sith guy.
JJ said she may have crossed paths with Yoda at some point and left it at that, and he is the one character that wasnt really addressed in this movie, so Im pretty sure she is there to fill that role of the wise old sage or whatever, and will be the Yoda of this series in the next 2.
