How do the spaceships go at lightspeed without hitting anything?

They take off and dodge rocks and debris in the sky and then go at lightspeed without fear?

    • I remember seeing or reading an explanation for this: I guess theres a system that plots the course for your destination which avoids shit like that.sofakingback
    • I remember in the scenario, that system had broken so they couldn't do it safely. But they did it anyway, running the risk.sofakingback
    • Something like that, its a movie. Its safe to say a lot of shit won't add up. :)sofakingback
    • I wonder if they ever addressed that?:

Yep - just watched for 2nd time - it's much better watching it twice.
Some of the plot problems and poor dialogue/acting really didn't bother me as much this time round.
Poe is a great likeable character.
There are still problems with it but a solid start and you can see how it will get better with each episode hopefully.
Just wish they hadn't chosen to do another Death Star and some other bits which were lame.
    A high 7/10.
Also great watching with your child.
I think my issues with it were like I originally said partly due to watching it at 1am when exhausted from work.
Also interesting some of the nuances I didn't notice which will clearly become more important in the next episode.
Phew - bit of a ramble but so pleased I liked it more 2nd time.

    Based on fadein11's link: http://www.dailydot.com/geek/sta…

"The novelization, unlike the movie, emphasizes Kylo's quest to figure out who Rey is. He can't believe that she's just a random scavenger. When she retrieves Luke's lightsaber with the Force to commence their duel, he mutters to himself, "It is you."

Why was that simply line not in the movie?? A great cliff hanger that would lead into greater fleshing out in the next movies.

    • *simple lineETM
    • yep - I think the film was heavily chopped to keep it shorter. Which led to some of its flaws.fadein11
    • But this would take all of 3 seconds and mean so much! Either they have changed the overall idea that he recognized her, or it was a shite decision to exclude.ETM
    • i thought that recognition was addressed by him losing his shit upon learning the droid made it out with the help of "a girl".scarabin
    • maybe you interpreted that scene as him just being massively sexist?scarabin
    • I thought that too... but it's not clear enough. That simple line would have cemented it.ETM
    • i kinda enjoy being teased and wondering about things, figuring things out, as opposed to being beaten over the head by every point but that could just be mescarabin
    • while some people are angry that rey's history wasn't outlined it makes me excited because i know it's going to be addressed in future moviesscarabin
    • there's a lot of information there and i'd hate for it to just be glossed over in 5 minutes just because people can't deal with mysteryscarabin
    • Fair enough, the guy who wrote the novel is the same guy who wrote the alternate timeline novel splinter in the minds eye, which was a good read. Probably gonnaburd-turglar
    • Pick up a copyburd-turglar
    • yep - I read that years ago.fadein11
    • that sounded smug - meant yes it's cool. May read again actually.fadein11
    • Lol, I didn't take it that wayburd-turglar
    • @scarabin... it would still be a tease. It would just build the mystery for the audience while we wait, knowing that he did for sure recognize her. That's all.ETM
    • Splinter of the Mind's Eye was Lucas' Plan B for a sequel. He instructed the author to keep it small in scale... confined. That was if SW flopped, the optionETM
    • for a low budget sequel was still available. The book is really kinda terrible.ETM
    • Think so? I thought it was well written. Plotnwise didn't hold a candle to empire trukes back. Kind of like shadows of the empire, loved that bookburd-turglar
    • * plot wiseburd-turglar
    • The plot... Vader falling in a pit... take your pick.ETM
    • You don't need such a simple line when you see all of Rey's actions... why the fuck you need blatant dialogue to understand something so visually clear?PonyBoy
    • Rey's actions don't confirm her and Kylo have a past... or that he knows her. Explain how her actions do that.ETM
    • Of course they don't "confirm" anything... But it's implied... :-) They obviously have some sort of connection... Yes?PonyBoy
    • Again... 2 more Eps to go... Answers are coming... This film is just the setup—be patient!PonyBoy

i bet anything that supreme leader spork or w/e is actually like 3 feet tall. 1 more gripe though, those rolley poley tentacle dudes were corny as fuck, in fact, that whole intro to han and chewy scene was terrible and was like some shit out of stargate sg1

    • < yep. thought the same - he will be incredibly weak and scrawny in real life so Ren will easily kill him when he finally turns good at end of epVIIIIfadein11
    • and yep the whole intro to Han + smuggling ship + gangs - was the worst part of the film and could have been so good.fadein11
    • It was like a SNL version of it. Han and Chewie enter, the crowd cheers.raf
    • Yea, out here we've got showcase deluxes where you can have a few beers and sit in a chair that doesn't kill your ass after two and a half hoursburd-turglar
    • In other words, I am going to have to see this again, and in style. Need to further examine the clip where what's her face gets dropped off on not tatooineburd-turglar
    • That's just super. Do they actually still have theaters that don't have reclining seats, alcohol, pizza, coffee, fries etc.?ETM
    • Yea, 20 bucks a ticket, comes with an appetizer and a single beer and you get waited on or somethingburd-turglar
  • inteliboy3

I can't wait to see it again. And I can't wait to see the next one. The last time I felt this way about a blockbuster was Fellowship of the Ring.

Sure it was flawed. Though man, all those stupid comic book movies every one loves and has dominated the "tentpole" arena for the last decade - they are STUPID. And BAD. And really really flawed with huge plot holes, shit boring predictable stories and guys running around wth stupid costumes etc. Yet no one seems to bat an eyelid with those films. Thank fuck Star Wars is back.

    • god comic book films get serious backlash from fans when not done well.fadein11
    • SW has plot holes, predictable stories and guys running around in stupid costumes too... just saying :)ETM

fade, i don't know about you but the more we discuss it the more forgiving i feel about the film's flaws and am excited to see it again for what it is.
one thing it checked for sure is the nostalgia box, and there's still a lot of very good in it.

    • that's what JJ is good at right now...nostalgia retro updatesdocpoz
    • Yep - I am also worried because I watched it late when really tired I didn't have the right mindset... perhaps I have been harsh. I just expected to be blownfadein11
    • away especially after reading all the reviews/reactions.fadein11
    • I will be seeing it again with daughter as she loves them all (and I guess that is the point) - not catering to old nostalgic men. But there are problems, Ifadein11
    • really didn't see the masterpiece people are saying it is. But anyway - everyone enjoy it for what it is, a fun movie. I will try to leave my cringe face at thefadein11
    • desk next time ha.fadein11
    • Nostalgia retro update films?
      ★☆☆☆☆
      1/5, max score.
      nb
    • You even seen it yet?ETM
    • No, I may not. It just bums me out that nearly all the top-grossing movies are sequels or franchise films these days.nb
    • Which is not the fault of Star Wars or any particular franchise.nb
    • Sorry, I don't mean to go off-topic here. My complaints about SW are the same ones I'd have about Transformers, TMNT, Spiderman, Fast&Furious, etc.nb
    • always some asshat that hates everything popular. its popular bc its good dude. people love star wars. its far beyond transformers or tmntCygnusZero4
    • I don't hate everything popular. I wish that original ideas could make lots of money, inspiring more original ideas. Instead we get an endless stream of remakesnb
    • As I said, my only complaint about Star Wars is that it contributes to the same problem as those other films I mentioned. I didn't say it was as bad as them.nb
    • I have to agree nb - the 5 trailers before SW were all of that trend...fadein11
    • Look at the top grossing films for the past few years. 8 (or 9) out of the top 10 will be remakes or franchises. It's simply the way it is these days.nb
    • It's just safe betting - studios don't risk their entire business on original work and creating new fanbases - they have a readymade audience with this stuff.fadein11
    • They used to and many nearly and did go under on one film production.fadein11
    • Yep. Star Wars, like the others, is a movie produced as commerce, not art.nb

So... according a text message from my (somewhat elitist) friend, a graduate from London film School, and a film reviewer on a Danish newspaper, who just saw TFA:

"It's... unneccesary. That's all i'll say for now".

Cygnus wait until you've seen it to say it must suck for Lucas to see someone do better than him with SW.

I just saw it and couldn't say if it's better than the original trilogy, what I can say is that it only exists thanks to the orignal films (duh).

    • he was probably referring to the prequels mostly, and Lucas only directed one of the original films I thinkmonospaced
    • I know, still it's very much his thing.spl33nidoru
    • how did you see it?fadein11
    • It's not out in Europe until Midnight tonight, press screening?fadein11
    • It's out here in France since this morning 9amspl33nidoru
    • (films come out on wednesdays here)spl33nidoru
    • Talking about the prequels. Lucas didnt make Empire or Return. Obviously there is not one person that is going to think this is worse than the prequels. lmaoCygnusZero4
    • fuck just looked - why did you get it early!?fadein11
    • But yep Cygnus point was clear - the prequels were awful and Lucas directed them. Lucas only directed A New Hope of originals.fadein11
    • and Empire is easily the best - so he had a valid point imho.fadein11
    • Cygnus let's discuss it after everybody's seen it ;)
      fadein11 : i know, weird http://www.wired.com…

  • fadein110

To be fair to JJ I am starting to think this film was ruined in the edit. As a 3 hour film it may have worked out better, more backstory and occasionally slower pace. Not slow like the prequels as if good dialogue and story it wouldn't feel slow.
I think Disney insisted on a 2:15 tops duration for kids.
It may be much better with a longer edit if that ever emerges.

    • you are obviously way down in the minority with this opinion.CygnusZero4
    • ^ yep I know. But myself and 3 friends all left with the same feeling. And a lot of the faces leaving didn't look happy.fadein11
    • We really wanted to like it and totally expected to... but the pace, lack of character development due to it and near total lack of original ideas let it downfadein11
    • badly... Not a hater so don't want to be saying this. But perhaps its a SW film for new not old fans.fadein11
    • Itll probably work for me. I like the prequels, to an extend. Theres some things I hate in them, but I like all the cool SW shit in them.CygnusZero4
    • Some shit acting and dialogue in all 3, but to me theyre mostly fun, stupid sci fi movies. Im not picky lolCygnusZero4
    • Thats cool and a lot of people will feel like that - there is cool stuff in there. Just something wrong - I will work out after another watch.fadein11
    • I guess I just always want to see another Empire lol - I am old and nostalgic.fadein11
    • Dont spoil anything, but do we get to see another guy with a red saber aside from Kylo?CygnusZero4
    • Cygnus from what you're saying I think you'll have a great time with it. I'm gonna go ahead and post one spoiler that will make it or break it for most...spl33nidoru
    • SPOILER : : ekamer a yllacisabspl33nidoru
    • Cygnus : no other red saberspl33nidoru
    • damn. guess we'll have to wait for 8 or 9 to see thatCygnusZero4
    • @cyg - you will love BB8 - star of the show in my opinion - best ever SW droid.fadein11
    • the droids were always kinda the stars :)monospaced
    • To complain about character development... did Ep. 4 have good developement? Not really, not on it's own.ETM
    • We now see the whole character as they grew in the trilogy, and apply it as a whole.ETM
    • @ETM - watch and you will know what I mean. In EPIV - Luke was setup as a farm boy with bigger aspirations, Obi Wan as a reclusive mystic, Solo as a roguishfadein11
    • smuggler, Vader as the epitomy of evil - it was all v.clear without spoon-feeding pieces of information - the characters were entwined into the plot of thefadein11
    • film - it stood alone and as part of a bigger mythology. A lot of the new characters in this film are vague, and you crave for more info as to how they gotfadein11
    • there. I know more will be revealed in later episodes, but I also feel as a start to a new trilogy with new characters character and plot are v.weak. I thinkfadein11
    • you will see what I mean even if you are not bothered about that. Just comments. I am not a SW hater - it was a huge part of my childhood hence why I bother tofadein11
    • comment. I am still quite shocked that I feel like I do with the great overrall reaction and the gut feeling I had that it would be great.fadein11
    • K. I'm talking my oldest son. I can be pretty critical, so I'll admit I'm afraid I'll have similar views as yourself.ETM
    • Well I hope you don't. Perhaps I am too serious. Hope you and your boy enjoy.fadein11
