@ok not ok
Ive been on redshift for 4 years or so. Its very quick, I would say you need to know some basics to set up properly but they also now have auto modes available. I always liked that you buy (now rent) the software and you can use on any platform. So your license means you can install on houdini/c4d/blender etc.The recent updates have been quite buggy I think, I am still running an older version that is very stable. I haven't used octane, Ive used arnold which gave beautiful results but was just too slow. I think its just what you start with and get comfy with, you can get same results on any renderer just different settings and render times. There are lots of technical pros and cons that are determined by what kind of work you would be doing.
- I've been using Redshift for about two years. From what I've heard from users of other GPU renderers is that GPU rendering in general is buggy.CyBrainX
- I've used Arnold a little for Toon Shading. It's better than Sketch and Toon and a lot less glitchy. Arnold has GPU rendering now but I haven't used it becauseCyBrainX
- the Toon Shading isn't supported in GPU. There are a lot of features that Redshift doesn't have but it's still easy to learn if you know Redshift.CyBrainX

^I've been picking up on fusion 360, and oh how it's changing everything regarding modeling. If you're into hard surface this thing is much-much easier to learn than polygonal/sub-d modeling.
the hobbyist version is free, you just need to register:
https://www.autodesk.com/product…- I switched from c4d to blender some years back never looked back. But I find fusions 360 generative design tools very interesting.islandbridge
- The next app I will go into is Houdini. Just hate it so damn expensive to get to work with unity. It’s the king of generative and real-time 3D.islandbridge
- I learned a bit of blender last year, very cool software but I much prefer C4D UIdyspl

Wish there was some sort of unreal render engine for C4d.
That demo makes my efforts in C4D look like the equivalent
of Amiga 500 games in comparisons to Playstation 4 games...- Why not.. er.. just use Unreal Engine?Nairn
- I mean, make up all your objects in your usual C4D workflow, then bring them into UE and use its rendering magic?Nairn
- I saw this last week. That is insane. I wouldn't have expected that kind of performance in my lifetime in any 3d environment.CyBrainX
- ^Nairn, cos I'm a noob when it comes to c4d and 3d and just want something as easy to use as After Effects.shapesalad
- Ah, gotcha. Well if you're a noob in C4D, why not become a noob in UE? :)Nairn
- @Nairn, Do you know Unreal Engine? How do you think it compares to Unity? Obviously, this video makes Unreal look great. I've been meaning to get into VR.CyBrainX

@mugwart
"what do you want to achieve"I want to be able to make still images and be skilled enough to take on any modelisation then being able to properly texture/light and render it.
I'm not really into animation, mograph etc...I primarly want to do it for myself (always loved 3d), and eventually bring some capabilities to work.
I was doing some 3d years ago, but it was pretty empirical and I was lacking a lot in modelisation. I would base everything I'd do from simple extrusion but that was it.
Since then, I've lost the little I knew :/- my advice to anyone right now would be learn unreal.mugwart
- c4d is fun and good for small projects but a pain in the arse for major productions. Houdini is a great but metapyhcial cluster fuck. Modo is worth a checkmugwart
- modeling and lighting/texturing is also two different things. If for fun and hard surfaces you might get away with blender (i know) and light it in unreal.mugwart
- but always find examples of work you like and look at what the artists did to use them and mimic them.mugwart
- What kind of still images? Realistic interiors? Sci-fi? Abstract? Cartoon?shapesalad
- I'd say realistic/sci-fi. more like having an idea of a visual and being able to make it.dyspl
- http://shaq3d.cgsoci…dyspl
- oh ffs...dyspl
- so ideally this would go down like "I want to make a serie of images on that theme", then take a few weeks/month to make it.dyspl

I've been wanting to get back to 3d for some time now, but I'd like to get better foundations that what I had before. Anyone know of any training/class program in california, near LA?
- Isn't it maya oriented tho?dyspl
- I've check gnomon in the past, the online courses would be perfect.not sure if I should switch to maya or stick with c4d.dyspl
- I tried learning Maya 5 which was a long time ago but I found it waaaay harder to learn than C4D. If you want to use Maya, you better use it everyday.CyBrainX
- Maya is a horrible beast but its the corner stone of VFX. What do you want to achieve?mugwart
- Maya I cant imagine being the king of the castle for much longer. If you want to do illustrations/ motion graphics stick to c4d.mugwart

@Face_Melter, here's a link to that site: http://www.badking.com.au/site/
They make Zbrush assets but they are available as OBJ files.- Christ. A month later I see this - yeah, I have seen these, tried the OBJ files - nice mixture of bits and pieces. I recommend them to everyone.face_melter
- Nice one @face_melter, the artstaion link you posted is bonus too.PhanLo

Did this as a test for the scene I posted earlier. I added a kitbashed C-130 to replace the one in the shot and a few other things but the scene isn't working and I have zero enthusiasm to try and make it work. Interesting as a technical exercise, but ultimately boring as an image - I had way, way, more fun with the GitS stuff.
- Although, I enjoyed making this. Might be the way to go - using the 'bots in smaller, more focused scenes.face_melter
- Looks interesting. What was your role in this? And what is a C-130. Forgive my ignorance. I don't know much about this kind of production.CyBrainX
- Oh, I added the two droids as replacements for the existing soldiers to see how they looked at scale. A C130 is a military transport plane, like a Hercules.face_melter
- Fuck, i missed this - so good!
Where's the C-130?detritus

- You can add objects to be excluded in the "Projects" tab in a light. In some cases adding a Compositing Tag and checking off "Seen by GI" can be useful as wellevilpeacock
- oh you are the man!
so simple but I could't figure it out thank you!Miguex - I forget where stuff like that is all the time; it only comes up for some projects.evilpeacock
- Also, if you use Ambient Occlusion with transparent refractive objects, remember to use a compositing tag with Seen by AO unchecked to prevent severe shadows.CyBrainX

Is there any way to get hair to grow on hair? I even made the first hair editable and tried to apply hair to that but the geometry seems cursed with baldness. Has anyone run into this?
- Actually, I can't apply hair to anything at all. I created a new file, made a cube editable and even that won't accept hair.CyBrainX
- What luck will I have trying to contact Maxon? Last time, they never replied at all.CyBrainX
- there is a feather object, if that's what you're trying to achievefeel
- yup, try the feather object. It's basically hairs on hairs as a preset.baseline_shift

I had some downtime today and decided once and for all that I knew how to randomize light clone intensity. I made a scene file that have a few examples. This one is a little more complex
But the one I have visible in the source file is the one to look at first. Each example has an annotation tag describing the setup.

Happy cloning.

hey, does anyone have any L system preset resources?
cant seem to find anywhere :/ and feel like they MUST exist somewhere on ze internet
thanks
- :/where_am_i
- maybe too vague - L system code presets for mo spline is what im after. trying to do myself leads to too many crasheswhere_am_i
- I know what you're talking about, couldn't find it also :( but found a bunch of articles talking about itfeel
- this guy have a nice tutorial and cheat sheet too
https://vimeo.com/37…feel - thanks ive seen that, its still not so easy. one wrong 'b/f' and crash citywhere_am_i
- I find that L-system so unfriendly I spend hours extruding my own branches instead. http://talesfromtheh…CyBrainX

- dont know why it isnt looping. the source does. gah!where_am_i
- you need to set it to loop in PS or wherever. the desktop preview will always loop regardlessfadein11
- i did, its exported with 'forever'. loops cont on desktopwhere_am_i
