Abandoned gas stations are out - Ghost In The Shell-style enormo holograms and mechanical decoration is in.

Still haven't decided how to treat the holograms, think it will take multiple passes to get all the effects I need - solids, two-sided material lit from within, coloured luminosity and lights and to do everything as separate components. Interesting exercise. Of course I could just lump everything into AE via the C4D bridge, but I don't know AE. At all. Would probably be faster to learn the basics than do all the renders :/

they call them solid holograms aka solograms.
      uan
    • That is a huge undertaking. When I saw this at full size, I wondered how great it would look with a Sketch & Toon style.CyBrainX
    • It's a challenge to be sure. My regular arch-viz work is tedious so I need this to maintain my enthusiasm and learn new techniques.face_melter

    Exciting:

    http://tachyonrender.com/news/20…

"Tachyon Render is a realtime renderer for Cinema 4D that fully integrates into the rendering pipeline. Using physical based shading, Tachyon Render focuses on highest possible image quality. Users can scale from realtime feedback to high quality multi-sampling that trades realtime render times for better quality.

Tachyon Render is currently under development. We are planning the beta launch in the first half of 2017."

Maxon has started a new labs thing-type-deal, where people can submit various plugins and scripts they have created and let people download them for free. Choice is limited at the moment, natch, but maybe worth keeping an eye on.

    https://labs.maxon.net/

I'm trying out Extrudifier, a script which adds dynamic greebling to objects.

    • A greeble or nurnie is a fine detailing added to the surface of a larger object that makes it appear more complex, and therefore more visually interesting.CyBrainX

Does anyone have issues with the MoGraph Tracer? I have one tracing some clones and it's spazing out big time. the trails are going ahead of the clones sometimes but not others. If I add things to the scene, that's when it usually freaks out. I can't even imagine what's wrong other than it just being another C4D bug. Is there a workaround?

    • yeah it's shitJulesvm
    • x-particles has a much better tracerJulesvm
    • also try caching your mograph setupJulesvm
    • Good advice regarding cache. I'm actually sending a scene file to Maxon because I blame them so often for their inconsistent software.CyBrainX
    • I tried x-particles and found that harder to control. I've been stuck on this all day. It's pretty sad and I'm starting to whine and piss myself.CyBrainX
    • tracer works fine for me, if you wanna leave trails, you should set From End at the trails end, and there's a setting to control if it is tracing clonesfeel
    • it is time based, so you should reset to frame 0 when you make a change, and you can't scrub your timeline to see it in action, you should always hit playfeel
    • "connect elements" is kinda shitty, to do that effect you should use atom array, tracer works best when tracing thing moving in spacefeel
    • oh, and it tracing ahead of the clones, it has to do with the order of your items, tracer should always come last for a better effectfeel
    • Oh, order is a good suggestion. I always draw a blank on that issue. Should the tracer go on the bottom of the list in the object manager?CyBrainX
    • For now, I have a working file. I had to recreate the damn tracer object every time I changed anything related to geometry or animation in the scene.CyBrainX
    • yes, by the end of the list, after everything else took place. about recreeating the tracer, it may have to do with rewinding your timeline and playing againfeel
    • tracer doesn't need to be inside any hierarchy, it traces whatever is linked in tracer linkfeel
    • I think it might play better at the bottom of the list but it still broke when I added more clones.CyBrainX
    • It should be interesting to see what Maxon says about it. I sent them a scene file and description of the issue.CyBrainX
    • wanna share with me? I can take a look if you wantfeel
    • Thanks. I put some notes in Project Settings > Info.

    • Just found this. I think an Alembic export of the tracer may help. I will try later.

Testing RT render in the new version of Vray for C4D...

Bit of a fucking beast. It seems the more complex/heavy the geometry the longer it takes to start up, so anywhere between 5 and 10 minutes you are staring at a black window hoping that Cinema hasn't fallen over. Then *BANG* you get what starts out as a fairly grainy render which improves sharply over the next few passes. Good for getting previews out the door, which is what i'm using it for now. But still, 128GB of ram. Fuck me.

    • 125 gb ram aahahahsted
    • oh crap i see :D i would suggest to close ps during the render... (you will see why :)sted
    • Chrome's no memory minnow either...detritus
    • Ps doesn't impact much when the file is small. Now, if it was Illustrator my machine would explode and take most of the office with it.face_melter
    • on windows ps is using resources in the bg with that html helper service (Adobe CEF Helper)sted
    • Works fine for me. RT spikes the ram/cpu then settles down when the passes start. My machine can handle having both running.face_melter

I just finished a big gig on Arnold... I've used Octane in the past and I'm conflicted

On one hand Arnold is bullet proof... doesn't blink at heavy geo, and that was a life saver. But if you want high quality grain free results, it's still very slow. We were getting ~1hour frames.

Octane is super fast, but requires expensive GPUs and honestly a switch off of OSX - haven't pulled the trigger on either.

I also think Arnold is way easier to use.

    • Also worth noting that the Arnold debs have been teasing a GPU version of Arnold to be released soonJulesvm
    • Also when I'm thinking back to Octane days I was getting similar render times when I cranked the settings, but that was on 5year old hardwareJulesvm
    • I'm on a 12 core trash can with 32 GB RAM. Thanks for the input.CyBrainX
    • Ran into the same problems when testing Arnold. From what I have read, using various passes to diagnose what takes the time ie. grain/noise is the way to go.face_melter
    • Despite being balls-deep in Vray, I'm impressed with Arnold. Took no time to fathom it out and get it running, even recreating difficult Vray materials.face_melter
    • CyBrain Unless you want to get off the Mac Pro you should def go ArnoldJulesvm
    • I will buy a PC for home but I got my company to spend about $10k on my Mac Pro last year so getting a new computer at work isn't an option for a while.CyBrainX

hey face melter can i get a more detailed response please ;)

hehe thanks thats great info. Just thinking about it at the moment. I do mainly motion stuff but the physical renderer/DOF struggles on my laptop. So been thinking about a machine I could leave at office and hit render etc.

Def want GPU as would like to get into some octane too.

Thanks again for the detailed response

do you find the system stable? My memory of my old PC with studio max etc was a crash every few minutes

    • oops sorry i meant 'mekk'where_am_i
    • and facemelter obzwhere_am_i
    • Stability isn't really an issue with C4D nowadays - plugins cause it to fall over. My setup at home and at work has been great, only Vray gives me grief.face_melter
    • Arnold has also been great (non-GPU rendering though), but various weird glitches prevent me from switching over completely.face_melter
    • Where are you based and what is your budget? Maybe I can pick a list at PCPartPicker.com for you. Do you plan on building yourself?mekk
    • thanks im in south africa, it is merely a thought at the momentwhere_am_i
    • oh I heard harware prices are insane there. Start over at pcpartpicker, they also have builds for rendering to start with :)mekk

Do any of you use PC for c4d?

thinking about getting a machine for rendering but have no idea what to get. Havent had a PC in 15/20 years. Any suggestions on where to start?

anyone know if mac to pc (or v/versa) projects have issues?

    thanks

    • or alt, buy old mac pro and customize the shit out of itwhere_am_i
    • C4D runs ok on Macs, but given the recent minuscule spec bumps, for a dedicated 3D machine, PC is the way to go if you want pure grunt for your money.face_melter
    • Files are agnostic, so they work across platforms. Only thing you need to watch is plugin compatibility. Some, such as Vray, use dedicated OSX versions.face_melter
    • C4D performance was the main reason I moved from Mac to PC. Like, 4x the power at half the price.face_melter

Antimotion, if it's helpful I've been making a series of screencasts highlighting my workflow. The most recent one is here:

Its a bit fast, and I don't narrate over it like a proper tutorial, but it will at least give you a sense of one persons typical workflow.

Good luck!! Ive been using cinema for 6 or 7 years, and I'm still uncovering new things.

    • Everyone is still uncovering new things in C4D.CyBrainX

If you really want to learn C4D in depth, follow RocketLasso. He used to be part of GreyscaleGorilla but started his own company three years ago. He does livestreams where you ask him any question and he'll do a breakdown of it. Maybe I'm just posting an obvious reference but maybe some people here don't know. Here's his latest livestream.

    • Scrolling up, I just noticed I posted one of his videos from a few months ago. I'll get my hat and go...CyBrainX

Yesterday Maxon announced a new version for C4D, exclusive to subscribers (not available for perpetual users), and the update is mediocre to say the least...
But I started to feel a lot suspicious with the changes, which seems to be targeted at people who wants to create Beeple's like artworks..
Ready to use trees/ statues/ 3D models, and easy to apply in your scenes...

Then they had a live to announce it, and started mentioning Bepple, and started with the disclaimer "Hey people, there is too much negativity right now, lets focus on the positive, so we are now giving this that we call.. NFTees! For people who are positive in the chat! And guess what, we are now planting trees!!"

I've never felt so compelled to abandon a software so fast like this before...

So yeah, C4D is now an NFT artwork-maker.

    • Should I jump into Maya..?
      Blender?
      Houdini...?
      Fabricio
    • I think there was a lot of talk about Beeple because he was presenting at the Maxon conference today. There wasn't much change in the content library aside fromCyBrainX
    • it being online which is great since that content library was a 5 GB download in the past. I wouldn't get hung up on NFT hype. Any software can be involved inCyBrainX
    • making one. I started playing around with it today. I love the dynamic placement tools and improvements to the interface.CyBrainX
    • It is just the mentality behind everything that pisses me off you know? "Keep the positive attitude, and we give you gifts, hey, we are planting trees"Fabricio
    • Feels like a pre-emptive PR move with zero actual concern for the environment.Fabricio
    • Also, they dont support anymore perpetual licenses 2 months after the release.. so, if you buy today S24, you will get bug fixes for maximum 2 months..Fabricio
    • ... nothing else. This is unnaceptable for a 3.500 software.Fabricio
  • Fabricio0

Tomorrow there will be a new release for C4D, R21...
and honestly, I dont think there is a lot of improvements, since the version R18, which is the one I currently use...

Maxon is also going subscription based, and they offered me a "discount" price on the subscription if I converted my perpetual license into a subscription.... which I felt like I was kicked on the nuts.

"Hey, we will take this car that you bought from us, and we will charge now a rent, but dont worry, it will be a smaller rate, because now you wont own anything anymore :)"

I am thinking of switching to Blender... is any of you in similar situation?

    • R20 was a huge update last year. The volume feature is a great option. R21's big feature are Fields for dynamics.CyBrainX
    • Yeah, but none of these are really useful for character animators :(
      Which version you have CyBrainX?
      Fabricio
    • I use R20 at home and R19 at work. R20 was probably the biggest upgrade they ever had. I don't do much rigging work. I like modeling characters thoughCyBrainX
  • shapesalad0

Anyone know if cinema 4D lite in AE will feature the new Volumetric Modelling stuff in R20?

Would be great not to have to pay £2500+ to update my R15.

    • I'm guessing it's not going to be in Lite...shapesalad
    • i'd guess the volume stuff are part of mograph, so it won't be present in litefeel
