We didn't panic over the swine flu (H1N1) because it had an average incubation period of just two days and you'd be contagious for a little over a week after symptoms appeared.
COVID-19 has a much longer incubation period and you are infectious before symptoms show, which are mild.
Mortality rates are also orders of magnitude different: 0.02% for H1N1, up to 3.4% for COVID-19.
Most people recovered from H1N1 without complication, while 19% of COVID-19 patients need to be hospitalized.
That's why we didn't panic about the swine flu.

With all of the government debt being incurred, the free-flow money-printing, and the decimation of the economy, the austerity measures we'll be facing when all of this is over are going to be breathtakingly cruel.
