    I was pro "Remain" but I don't understand the big hype about the EU. On paper it's a good concept but in reality it's a big, bureaucratic, wasteful mess.

    And why is there still such a big discussion. There was a democratic referendum and people have voted. What would remainers say if brexiters lost and wanted a second referendum to overthrow the outcome?

    That's exactly what the war criminal Tony Blair wants. To overthrow a democratic outcome. If a war criminal like Tony Blair is pushing something then for sure it can't be that great.

    RE: the Farage kids having German passports:

    Folks here have Irish citizenship too, 3 million of us... i imagine if you tab up everyone in the UK with qualifying ties to EU states it's a few percent of the population that will be free to move and work... imagine being English with English parents and living in Belfast right now - how apparent it is that no matter what you get in terms of a deal, the more British you are, the more you will be disadvantaged!

    An English mate (he claims mostly Welsh) moved from Berlin to Donegal a couple years back before the vote, hasn't lived in England for 20 years but unknowingly lost his right to EU citizenship by moving between EU countries... it is fucked.

    Anyway, i'm sure some of you are aware of this but if I send one Brexiteer in to a jealous rage at being a second class citizen in their own country and force them to think, mission accomplished.

    yay!

    from the times

    Brexit will cost ‘at least £10bn’ more than taxpayers were told

    The Brexit divorce bill will end up being at least £10 billion more than ministers claimed at the time the deal was signed, a report by the government’s financial watchdog suggests.

    The National Audit Office (NAO) accused the Treasury of failing to incorporate key uncertainties of “which it was aware” when ministers announced that the settlement would cost Britain between £35 billion and £39 billion.

    The government’s estimate did not include Britain’s commitment to the European fund that hands out overseas aid, the NAO said, adding that this would cost £2.9 billion after Brexit. The Treasury claimed it did not include the payments because the fund is not included in the main EU budget.

    The divorce bill estimate includes EU payments directly to the private sector worth £7.2 billion. The Treasury assumed that all EU loans to member states, companies and other institutions would be paid back. But in the agreement Britain has accepted €14 billion for its share of these contingent liabilities which it will have to pay if any debtors default.

    The NAO report also said the terms of the settlement gave “scope” for the European Commission to take decisions that would increase Britain’s payments. The commission could reclassify liabilities so they were included in the calculation of settlement payments, or dispose of assets shortly after the end of 2020. The EU could also “fast-track” funding applications towards the end of the current budgetary period to ensure the commitment was “made in time for the UK to contribute to its cost”.

    The NAO concluded that the “total cost of the settlement cannot be defined until there is greater certainty around future events”. It identified areas of uncertainty such as the UK’s economic performance in 2019 and 2020, the cost of pension liabilities and exchange rate fluctuations as the divorce bill will be paid in euros.

    Well this was obvious to anyone with a rudimentary grasp of logic:

    https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/uk/th…

    //////////////////////////

    Proposals for the future of the Irish border after Brexit were "annihilated" by EU officials, who said none of the options would work.

    EU diplomatic sources told The Daily Telegraph that Brussels officials delivered a "detailed and forensic rebuttal", and said "none of the UK customs options will work - none of them".

    The revelation came after Britain's lead negotiator Olly Robbins met with senior EU officials, and has raised doubts about hopes for the future deal with Europe.

    A UK Government spokesman said Britain is continuing an "intensive work programme to engage" all the scenarios set out in December's Joint Report, which was agreed by Theresa May and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker.

    It included three options for the Irish border, with Britain backing a close economic relationship that makes customs checks unnecessary or implements technological solutions that would make them near-frictionless.

    But in February, the EU published a version which only included the third "backstop" option, which effectively draws a customs border down the Irish sea.

    Mrs May said it was a scenario "no British Prime Minister could ever agree".

    She is facing pressure ahead of a vote in the Commons next week on keeping the UK in the European Customs Union. The same issue was defeated in the Lords.

    Mrs May could have to keep Britain in the customs union to avoid a hard border with Ireland.

    //////////////////////////

    I think of all the lies and misinformation fed by the leave campaigns their biggest success was generally keeping the Irish border out of the debate. It was also a huge failure of the remain campaign to not use it as a major talking point.

    It might be a complicated bureaucratic situation, but it's a very easy one to understand and spelling out how the border is unworkable outside the customs union would have been a strong argument for remaining.

    • This suits everyone. UK stays in the customs union and hardcore brexiteers get to blame EU and the Irish for ruining brexit for the rest of time.Fax_Benson
