So apparently my partner needs to login to a government website and generate a code that proves she has a right to work here, to give to employers. The code lasts for 30 days and has to be done every time she starts a new contract, which given the nature of her work means she'll have to do this quite a few times a year.

What a way to make 'em feel welcomed.

so the deals largely done with 3 main sticking points

Level playing field rules - the EU gave canada a deal where they have to meet the EUs current rules. but they want the UK to mirror all current and future rules (literally one rule for one and another for another)

Adherence - the EU want the European Court of Justice to be the arbitrator of any future disputes - hardly seems fair

Fishing - having obliterated the UKs fishing industry when we joined maastricht in the 1990s, the french want to continue to fish in uk waters after brexit. im sure theres a specific deal to be done but what do we get back for that?

at least thats what the media seems to be saying

For Hayoth and others who don't live under they tyranny of the EU but think they know all about it.

The EU is not wholly unelected. Proposals made by the EU Commission have to be approved by the democratically elected MEPs. Members of the Commission are chosen by democratically elected member state governments. I'm not saying that's a perfect system but it's far from how you perceive it.

The idea that the UK's laws are dictated to them by Europe is a myth. Have a look at the UK government's policy initiatives since the last general election and tell me that there we in thrall to a socialist dictator. The fact that we just held a referendum and voted to leave should give you a bit of a clue as to how strong the EU's iron grip is.

The idea that a European Superstate is inevitable is a myth. There isn't the political will for it to happen across Europe. The rise of right and far-right groups means the opposite is the case.

There are many things wrong with the EU. It is overly bureaucratic and and un-transparent. The Euro isn't working for the countries of southern Europe. It has huge, existential problems but it is a reality, and simply saying that it would be better if it didn't exist isn't going to get us very far.

Ultimately, it will need to reform or it will die. It might not have survived another recession. We may have just triggered that recession. If the EU is going to fail without causing a global financial crisis and political turmoil across Europe, it needs to be allowed to manage that death slowly and peacefully.

The UK and the EU are inextricably linked - whatever the UK's position in it. To think that pulling out like this will protect us from Europe's problems is insane. We've just exacerbated them and ours, with no plan and no thought as to how this affects Scotland, Northern Ireland, the rest of Europe, our own citizens, or anyone else, in the name of reclaiming a sovereignty we already had.

    • Well saidRanger

    • Not saying he is wrong...he's probably right on many issues. But a worldview like that is completely unacceptable to a lot of people in power.yuekit
    • yep for sure.fadein11
    • Blair's foreign policy (Iraq, WMD, Kelly etc.) was seen as a massive betrayal to many many Labour voters who fled. Corbyn's stance on that was v.appealing.fadein11

I overheard someone yesterday receive a telephone call, seemingly about some pre-discussed work, and the person at my end apologetically stated that they were holding off doing anything until after Brexit as they needed to "see what happens". Cue multiple apologies and guilty look.

A friend's brother is an estate agent and has laid off six staff as the entire sales market has ground to a halt, especially after the pound fell.

My own work has spluttered to a stop - I started off this year with the most enquiries I've had in the period for a good 5 years, but since then.. barely fuck all.

    No one's spending.

I have a couple of friends who have businesses peripheral to mine and they're in the same boat. Everyone's just biding time to 'wait and see'.

I have two other friends - a couple, one half American, one half Italian - he can't get work because his industry (pharma) has stopped taking anyone new on, and they can't move to Europe because all their savings are in the bank here, in pounds. They're trapped and can't further themselves.

can anyone in europe or the UK speak to any actual change they've experienced from brexit?

brexit is interesting to me because it was a parallel to trump here in the states, but we've had massive evidence of his impact since day 1, an impact that to this day is reverberating. walking down the street, being in a crowd, going through entire regions of the country and the shift in experience is palpable.

so, do any europeans notice the loss of the UK? do folks in the UK notice the exit yet?

i ask because everything i say are op-ed screenshots or stories about regretful business owners, but not necessarily anything about how this policy shift has changed anything other than airport queues
