I find it hard to share and transmit how we live this whole world cup thing here in Uruguay. I’m sure Salarrue kind of gets it, but it aint easy to entirely fit into a post how we feel it down here in the south of south america, specially being argentina’s little brother as regards ’fútbol’
Uruguay vs. France goes 11:00am local time in Uruguay on friday. Everyone at work already talking about an asado vs. “picada” (a vast selection of cheese, salami, chips, peanuts), vs. nothing, with or without beer, tv or projector.. If we fuck it up, it’s definitely going to be the most depressing friday afternoon ever. If we go through semis, shit’s gon get cray. I mean, there’s going to be a fat big party all over.
I remember back in South Africa 2010, when Uruguay beat Ghana, with the infamous Suarez’ goalie catch. I had never seen so many people celebrating on the streets. It had been more than 50 years since Uruguay had gotten into semis back in 2010. Only dads and grandpas were still talking about a glorious Uruguay until Forlan and that whole generation.
It’s a very special moment, and we take it VERY seriously. Its almost like nothing is happening until friday at 11am; everything seems paralyzed. Fútbol is extreme down here.
- Ok Uruguay is my team now.HijoDMaite
- @Hijo I feel that Mexico has some similarities with UY, but you guys have been getting into 8ths since 86! For us, Mexico’s been always bad-ass.maquito
- Thought you were more into Football (the Padres kind ;)maquito
- I saw a fist fight between a group of south american priests in 2010 watching the world cup in Argentina...Salarrue
- :)Salarrue
- I really like Uruguay since Forlan played for Olympique Marseille (I still despise Suarez since WC 2014). But France will be hard to beat.Longcopylover
- I'd really like Uruguay. But you know. Suarez.Hayzilla
- I am in France this Friday and will be very curious how the match goes. So far 3 people approached me about the desperate dropout of Germany.SimonFFM

Apparently, England is the only team in the World Cup comprising players entirely from the home league.
- England will win the World CupKrassy
- ..and both Sweden and Senegal have 0 players who play in their own country.dee-dubs

Thoughts on VAR?
- for points of objective fact - was it over the line? - it's good. For subjective decisions like was it a foul?, it simply moved the decision from one fallibleFax_Benson
- human to another. The drama that's created has been fun though.Fax_Benson
- too many penalties for my taste. it seems like an attempt to make football a "higher scoring" game.renderedred
- the main problem with it is that the super-slo-mo replays distort the action so as to not really resemble the original incident.Fax_Benson
- and for all the other imponderables like intent, premeditation...VAR is no real improvement on 1 referee on a pitch.Fax_Benson
- I'm torn like everyone TBH. I actually think that each team should get 4 VAR decisions per game. Like Tennis or cricket.Hayzilla
- If a team feels strongly that they were hard done by in a decision they can use one of their appeals. Would stop the constant crowding of the ref too.Hayzilla
- yah, it puts great pressure on defense players.renderedred
- Until VAR can be seen and integrated with the on-field referee more seamlessly I think it's current form breaks up the flow of the game too muchIanbolton
- And I watch football for the beautiful flow and skill of individual players and teamsIanbolton
- love it, also negates corrupt referees to a degree...which in this Russian world cup is a must lol_niko
- I think that's probably a good way to go with it, Hayzillaset
- Agreed, Hayzilla. Once a team uses up their VAR requests, that's it. Then they have to trust the referee.Continuity
- niko, refs don't have anything to do with Russia, they're assigned by FIFA. Currupt/biased refs such as Felix Brych can still choose to ignore VAR altogetherMilan
- I know but there's nothing stopping the Russians from getting to the refs while they're there. Oh and didn't know it was their call to check it or not_niko
- I like Hayzilla’s idea. But it’s an extension of the ref; you like/dislike its decision depending on your loyalties.MrT

Soooo... if England intentionally lose to Belgium, they can avoid playing Brazil at the quarter finals and then face France or Uruguay at the semi-finals, and instead take the easier path to the finals via Colombia and then Spain or Croatia... hmmmmm
- there is no easy path
play to winBluejam - Brazil, Uruguay and France look a LOT stronger than Colombia, Span and Croatia.Krassy
- whoa! might be on to something herechukkaphob
- pretty much everyone left in has had good and bad games. Spain are great to watch but look like they could lose to anybody. Brazil similar. Ditto others.Fax_Benson
- ha! Kane not even playing and Stone already subbed out. Def saving these guns and (potentially) letting England lose intentionally.Krassy
- .... and there's the Belgium goal ;-)Krassy
- called it!!Krassy
- A dull experiment on both sides. If England go out to Columbia the old shit will hit the old fan.MrT
- I'm not saying it's a respectable move by any meansKrassy
- Ah there are no easy games - very hard to know how any team will perform. No way anyone would have expected Sweden to top their group!pedromendez
