My wife is being heavily recruited for a job in Eden Prairie, MN (12 miles SW of Minneapolis). It's pretty much her dream job and comes with a very good relocation package.
We've lived in Portland, OR for the past 15 years and as much as I love this city we're ready for a change.
We've never been to Minneapolis and know nothing about the city except it's cold as shit in the winter and what we've seen in Purple Rain and old Twin/Tone videos.
Will this be a huge mistake? What's there to do there? Where's the cool parts of town. How's the creative community? What's the best agencies?Come on Minnesotans sell this to me.

Purple Rain is one kick ass movie.

Minneapolis has a good design culture for some unknown reason.
It is like a igloo there in the winter though and will be until the earth fries up.

if its her dream job does it really matter where you go? its not the middle east, and when its cold just wear some gloves and that?
hey, its a big deal sure thing, but don't let the cold and not knowing whats where etc worry you.
go for it, what do you really have to lose?

I grew up in Minneapolis. Surprisingly the design/theater/arts community is pretty strong. Don't live in Eden Prairie though, stay in the city proper.
Winters are rough although i think global warming is helping out some. They don't seem as brutal as they used to be.
- Is Eden Prairie suburban hell?

I sure hope she's not being recruited by Target. Might want to read all the horror stories that coming out...
- best Target work is done by outside agenciesmonospaced

The traffic down there sucks, rushhours are especially bad after a snow. But all things considered, you'll probably love it here. But living in EP might kinda suck.

born and raised. i love minneapolis but got tired of the winters. tons of design there and has a great music scene. it's actually not too terribly different from size and it's going ons (maybe less hippie'ish), but like others have already stated: you do not want to live in EP. live in Minneapolis proper. if you can rent a place close to the chain of lakes you will be golden (basically uptown or south minneapolis)
've had two stints at target(the second was for 5 years). don't believe all the negative media hype as of late. and although a some of the cretive work is produced by outside agencies, a lot of it is produced in house by a lot of very talented and nice people. if you don't want to work in corporate there are a ton of agencies in town.
let me know if you have any other specific questions. good luck.
