I searched around and didn't find anything all that great on here from years past. I'm curious to know who of you are big vinyl fans, what equipment you use, how long you've been buying records, some of your prized finds, records you want, etc. I'm really loving being new to this - it's already a bit of an addiction and after 3 years of mostly listening to music over Spotify I am loving the sound of vinyl.
Commence chatter.

I bought a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon 3. So worth the money and happy I bought it from a small local shop down the street from me.
Already upgrading to an acrylic platter because the static of the metal platter + felt mat is really annoying. I've read a lot about the sound improvements from the acrylic platter as well.
Playing through a Musical Fidelity V90-LPS Phono Stage, Marantz HDMI receiver and in-wall speakers. I won't upgrade this stuff until we have an actual house one day because I have no room for another amp or dedicated speakers.- they're sho nuff good decks...hans_glib
- but in-wall speakers...hans_glib
- oh lawdy-lawdy...hans_glib
- they sound pretty good. and i switch to Stereo mode, of course.mg33
- glad to hear it. some of those things sound terriblehans_glib
- Nice, I have the Genie MKIII in red a few years now, lovely turntables.eoin
- Forgive me if I'm being thick, but is there a speed switch?Eighty
- The Debut Carbon does not have a speed switch. Have to lift the platter to adjust the belt. But they make an attachable speed box.mg33
- Stereo mode sucksi_was

Welcome to the money pit of addictions. I've been collecting for 26 years, but I have a modest collection of about 1,000 records. I started buying records back in the 80's because they were cheaper than other formats to get used stuff. I could go to the record store with $20 and come home with 5-6 decent used picks. After a while, it just became my standard format because i had accumulated so many. I never got into tapes or CDs. I still listen to Spotify and MP3s in my car, at work, etc... but I make it a habit to give money to labels and artists who are catering to this community who still support physical formats. The one thing that bothers me lately is the endless repressings of albums that are easily attainable. Labels like Newbury are taking advantage of completists by repressing a record a "new color" and charging $30 for something that can be found on ebay for <$10. I suppose over saturation is expected once anything becomes trendy though, so I just choose not to support operations like this. Repress more OOP records that are in serious need of it, like Red House Painters for example.
I have a few records that are worth a lot, and a ton that aren;t worth anything, but my prized possession is the original Iron Maiden record club box set. 10 singles, one sent each month, housed in a giant box.
Cheers.

Driftmonkey,
I've given myself restrictions for the most part to control what I'm buying. I'm trying to buy stuff that I definitely know I will listen to many times, and avoid spur-of-the moment purchases of stuff that's trendy. A good example is this new band Future Islands. Some great songs, but I don't think I'll want to listen to that for very long.
I'm also going to try and build full collections of albums by my favorite bands, The Cure being number one so that's going to be a bit of a challenge. I've already gasped at what I'd have to pay for a few albums that are hard to find and don't have reissues.
The stuff I really like listening to is instrumental stuff like Mogwai, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, etc. I found a Sigur Ros box set with the first three albums at a store here for $165 in Very Good condition. Buying those three albums separate would cost more than that, so I might pull the trigger on it.
- DRIFTMONKEY0
$165 is a damn good price. I have an original pressing of Takk with the etched 10" which by itself goes for almost twice that.
Join Vinyl Collective, if you haven't already for up-to-date info on releases and a decent classifieds that frowns upon ebay pricing:

my bedroom setup circa '94 i think. just got my first 1200! omgsfa paired with my old beat gemini scratchmaster 'n technics sl-q3 that i modded by snipping the cable inside to stop it from being an automatic tt. so i could let my new (first) booger breaks 'n battle breaks records play the endless tones at the end, endlessly. to oh that scratch is makin' me itch. and clearly i was really big on hardcore electronic rave jungle. still have that whole wall 'o 90's stuff tucked away in a box somewhere...

Started buy Drum n' Bass records in 1997, now I mostly just buy stuff from second hand stores. Usually Jazz, and weird stuff to sample with the occasional house or techno record that isn't released digitally.
I have one piece of shit Gemini XL-100 that I've had since 97'. I need to replace it because the pitch randomly fucks up for no reason sometimes. I can still beatmatch with the fucker though. I've got an equally shitty Numark mixer that also needs replaced. All the pots and faders are scratchy as shit.
I would like to start buying more albums for listening on vinyl though. Really interested in Funk/Jazz fusion stuff from the 70's. Digging through bins of vinyl is a natural stress reliever.
For dance tracks to dj, I'm sticking to digital and CDJ's.

I'm LOVING the act of browsing. It's been a long time since I bought or browsed CDs, and records are just so much more fun to look at.
I need to get a handle on the type of jazz I like so that I know of certain records to look for.

Ughhh... Driftmonkey - I just found this... Unopened original pressing from what I can tell.

Thanks man!
The fun thing I'm discovering about vinyl is when something I've listened to a ton on headphones / Spotify sounds AMAZING on record. So far, the three albums that have really amazed me in terms of audio quality are:
Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream
Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
- DRIFTMONKEY0
I know man. There are so many records that reach a new level of sonic on nice setup.
I have that purple version of War on Drugs. Got it from the show a couple weeks ago here in SD. Really nice pressing. My favorite Mogwai is still Rock Action, then Young Team. Come on Die Young just got a 4LP reissue:
http://shop.chemikal.co.uk/acata…I've been getting into soundtracks a lot lately. Death Waltz is putting out some seriously out of this world stuff. The Maniac OST is one of my favorite purchases this year. and they have been consistently putting out all the John Carpenter soundtracks. Mondo has been releasing some interesting pieces as well. Their Drive OST sold out in about 90 seconds.
- Ooooohhh that deluxe addition looks nice!mg33
- Death Waltz has been killing it! Great label.chris_himself_2
