also started collecting vinyl with drum & bass and some hip-hop when i was 17/18 at the end of the 90s with dreams of being a dj. got into collecting classic breaks when i started messing around with production. got more into funk/soul/jazz through listening and learning about those records and artists.
my tastes are still the same, though i rarely buy new/current music on vinyl. i still dig, mostly looking for funk/jazz records i never had the pleasure of owning on vinyl.

This thread is a nice place to be.

Yeah, I think this will be a good ongoing thread!
Picked up these yesterday after work:
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl
Portishead - Thirds
Newest Bon Iver
First Interpol album
Neil Young Harvest ReissueGot up earlier than my wife this morning and already listened to Harvest, now onto Howl, which is a long time favorite I've only listened to on mp3. So much better this way! It's like you can hear random ambient noise in the studio, certain nuances to the music and they just make it sound so much more natural.
I was a little disappointed in the new Boards of Canada album. Maybe I didn't play it loud enough but it just didn't have the feel I expected it to.
- I have an original Harvest, and it has too much surface noise. Might need to upgrade at some point.DRIFTMONKEY
- Harvest is such a great album. My dad used to listen to it when I was a kid. I rediscovered it many years ago and still listen to it regularlysine
- listen to it regularly.sine
- I want to get the Massey Hall live album.mg33

What is your tastes? I collect most live albums from:
MMJ
Mark Kozelek
Maiden
ZappaThen there's an abundance of live jazz from Columbia, Blue Note, Impulse, etc... if you're into that. I prefer Monk's live stuff to his studio material, but with Miles it's the other way around.
Then there are the classics:
James Brown - Apollo
Johnny Cash - Folsom
The Who - Leeds (some consider the best live album ever made)
Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Rust
etc...

Technics 1200, since 1990. Had over 20 crates of records. Condensed that into a manageable collection when I left for five years. I still buy vinyl.
Where is everyone buying vinyl?
- I usually buy direct from the artist or label for new stuff. Used, I still visit record shops. Discogs is nice too.DRIFTMONKEY

I've read and heard good things about these: http://uturnaudio.com/turntables… anybody using one?

@ canoe re: where i buy records.
also http://www.dustygroove.com for State-side,
http://www.juno.co.uk for UK/Europe and
http://www.discogs.com for older/hard to find records.and local record shops and flea-markets. nothing beats finding a record you love for a few cents.
- funny, i hate paying high "collectors" prices for a record, but once i own it, it's priceless to me...sine

Coincidently, I just came across and watched this last night on Netflix. Highly recommended if you've not seen it.
I feel lucky to live in Chicago and have Reckless records (www.reckless.com) nearby. One of their locations is not even a half mile walk from my house.
Do all of you have good record stores nearby? Anyone order primarily from the web?
- mg330
Do any of you have this?
I bought that in 2009 and still have it. Can't remember what it cost (maybe around $80 preorder?) but nice to see it goes for quite a bit more now. I'd say that mine is in mint condition all the way around. The CD's weren't even listened to because a friend sent me all the mp3s of the records and cds.
- Pieced it together over the years if this has all their compscanoe

what's the safest/easiest way to ship vinyl across the coast?

Question for some of you as well:
What are you absolutely best sources for getting notified of upcoming re-releases and notable releases?
- i usually spend over an hour a day trawling twitter, soundcloud and record store previews. following labels, artists...kingsteven
- + the guy in my local store who works with the distros, knows about big releases months before.kingsteven
- even the new stuff you posted above is probably on it's nth pressing/ available anywhere...kingsteven
- if you want to find new stuff, go here and use your ears :) https://soundcloud.c…kingsteven

Do most of you keep your sleeves in a plastic sleeve? I am doing so with most new records but starting to think it looks a bit ugly.
- sublocked0
I've started selling my thrift finds on eBay. I figure since I'm digging for samples anyway, why not? We'll see if it's worth the time and effort for the little extra cash.
Putting a system in place right now to make it easier and streamline things. At the very least it'll support my vinyl habit I guess?

mg33. For proper storage, store in a plastic bag with the opening at the top. Place the paper sleeve with record outside of the jacket. This prevents shelve marks and jacket wear, and and allows easy access to the record, without having to remove the plastic bag. You can find fancy bags that fold over and seal too, if that's your thing. Also note, this is also how you ship records properly to avoid the record for shuffling inside the jacket and puncturing the corners.
- Good idea! Thanks.mg33
- This is how to store valuable records. Anybody who does this with 'new' records (that aren't limited/ first press) deserves punches.kingsteven
- ... punches. mostly Vinyl is meant to be played, shared. I keep my valuables in a box, not the shelf.kingsteven
