Has anyone traveled like this?
I would think there would be alot of uncertainty without help from someone or some saving or credit. However it seems overly romanticized. What would you do to make it work?

just do it.
You will never regret it.

a canadian friend of mine did this. young dude sold a house and has spent the last two years all over india, egypt, bali, etc taking pictures. i met up with him in cairo and burning man.
he's got living on only a couple dollars a day down to an art and just kinda makes up his itinerary as he goes

Best way is to have a job or a business you can run from anywhere.

Get on Odesk or Elance, the money sucks compared to normal salaries, but not when you're in India. Only trick is to find a good connection so as to be reliable. And you can really choose fun work and get plenty of it if done properly.
Or, right from the start, get a scuba instructor or English teacher's course under your belt. Those jobs can take you to amazing places!
This is of course to keep your travels going longer. You'll need to save a pile first by giving up a few luxuries...(eating out, taxis etc.) and even more so once you've set off. (though eating out in a lot of countries costs the same as cooking)
...oh and don't try the burning man thing... that'll eat about 2 months of travel in India, funding wise.
ps replace India with Bolivia, Peru, Thailand, Indo, Africa etc as applicable.

A coworker of mine quit last year, sold all of her shit and took off to travel around the world. I'm totally jealous and awed by her courage. She documents her travels here: http://savoringeverystep.com/

Some of these travel blogs are kind of gimmicky but also some good info

I've quit and traveled twice. Might as well do it if you are planning on moving anyway. Plus, got to SE Asia or some place cheap to get more for your money.

I'd do it if you just had a "job". Though if you were chasing something you really wanted to do, and love it, then it'd be nuts to disappear for an extended holiday for months or years.

Just keep prayin' to Jesus and you'll be fine.

In '06 I visited a friend in Japan for 10 days and had a great time, so I decided to save up, quit my job, and move back to Korea (I lived in Korea before, that's important to this story). So I did that a year later, and went to university in Seoul until the money ran out. I've wanted to go back since.

We sold our house yesterday, I just gave my notice today. The wife and I are going to South America for the next 6 months or so.

my primary friends are guys who work and live at a hostel where I'm at in Mexico, so every time we go diving or surfing theres always a few extra guys with them from wherever in the world, Japan, NZ, AU, I have to say, hippie travelers are the most chill and happy mother fuckers to hang with.
- nice, im a hippy too.?yurimon

One of our engineers has recently become a nomadic programmer. He's on his way to live in San Francisco for a month before heading to CO for a while, then to work in Europe for an undetermined amount of time.

ok, unpopular opinion here: what about staying the fuck where you are and making the best of it.
My city is full of these expat guys with savings on self-discovery trips. They come here, burn through their money, "having the time of their lives", dream about developing the next killer app or whatever and cause general havoc because they can leave anytime to the next cheaper city and don’t care what happens here after. They are like cultural vampires – they only take but never give.- Or: If you do it, please don't come to Berlin.grotesk_neue
