Einstein’s clock: The doomed black hole to set your watch by
Ladies and gentlemen, your challenger. Meet a black hole new to the neighbourhood, weighing 140 million suns. That’s nothing to sneeze at: this plucky upstart is 35 times more massive than the black hole that holds court at the centre of our Milky Way.

A team of Chinese scientists will be the first in the world to apply the revolutionary gene-editing technique known as Crispr on human subjects.

- Agreed. Huge for human tech. Let's hope it isn't demonized by ignorant moronsmonospaced

Previously unknown fifth fundamental force of nature discovered

@mono
The results of those experiments are valid, peer reviewed and replicable - the things that you have said are the only things that count in science.
The interpretation of those results is worthy of further consideration but the results still show that consciousness has had an influence on a material systems.
Now you say that because it comes from the edges of science it's not worth consideration even though it ticks all of the boxes you require for validity.- but it's not a belief systemmonospaced
- Science is full of belief, probability and theory. All of which are supported with experimental results. For several weeks last year, the majority of the world BELIEVED that we'd found stuff that travelled faster than the speed of light.Morning_star
- several weeks last year, the majority of the world BELIEVED that we'd found stuff that travelled faster than the speed of light. Those people who reported this were reputable mainstream scientists. It just not as black and white as you're making it.Morning_star

- "Belief" is just a word that you can define in a lot of ways. What people are trying to say most of the time when they bring this up is that science relies on evidence and tests.ukit2
- bring this up is that science relies on evidence and tests rather than some a priori knowledge about the existence of god.ukit2
- of God. Which is important since the mind can be easily fooled as anyone who has taken drugs knows :)ukit2

Consciousness -- the internal dialogue that seems to govern one's thoughts and actions -- is far less powerful than people believe, serving as a passive conduit rather than an active force that exerts control, according to a new theory proposed by an SF State researcher.
Consciousness, per Morsella's theory, is more reflexive and less purposeful than conventional wisdom would dictate. Because the human mind experiences its own consciousness as sifting through urges, thoughts, feelings and physical actions, people understand their consciousness to be in control of these myriad impulses. But in reality, Morsella argues, consciousness does the same simple task over and over, giving the impression that it is doing more than it actually is.
"We have long thought consciousness solved problems and had many moving parts, but it's much more basic and static," Morsella said. "This theory is very counterintuitive. It goes against our everyday way of thinking."
According to Morsella's framework, the "free will" that people typically attribute to their conscious mind -- the idea that our consciousness, as a “decider,” guides us to a course of action -- does not exist. Instead, consciousness only relays information to control "voluntary" action, or goal-oriented movement involving the skeletal muscle system.
- I went to a lecture on this topic recently. Very fascinating that a lot of our decisions are made before we are aware of them. Instinct?monospaced
- Yo Mono. How does the decision get made? i.e. what influences the choice to go right or left if no concious choice is made?Morning_star
- The brain processes a ton of information before it even reaches the "conscious" part of the brain. Study after study show most decisions are made before we act.monospaced
- A conscious decision IS made, but studies indicate it's not actually a fully conscious one since our subconsciouses are doing nearly all the work.monospaced
- Brain subconsciously processes images and variables related to going left or right, along with pre knowledge on subject. THEN it gives you a conscious choice.monospaced

There needs to be more education and studies done. Seems pretty simple to me, but just like GMO's, they are declared "safe" universally and a large fortune spent on lobbying to avoid such studies.
I am sure GMO's can be amazing, like growing in arid climates (maybe Monsanto is causing the drought in Ca?! j/k) and feeding large populations w/ little resources. Sadly, that's not where any effort is, it's on things like making an apple not change color when it's bruised, so we can eat worse apples and think that they are good.
I think everyone would agree that more studies would be prudent, but there's people that bought into the "GMO labeling would cost more", which makes absolutely no sense but people buy it.
Same thing with vaccines. There needs to be transparency and research, there are good and bad.
There also needs to be more research into the onslaught of auto-immune diseases that are spreading rapidly. At least the H1N1 vaccine has been proven to cause an auto-immune disease (narcolepsy), which, to me, would hasten more effort to study other vaccines and the side effects.
