I'm all for whatever will eventually let video games appear as if they 100% realistic images. Someday that will exist, where characters and environments look perfectly lifelike.
- That will take a long time. Not bc of TV's, but to sell an affordable system with that kind of power.CygnusZero4

But there is one good thing: You can use all the advertising done for SD vs. HD and rebrand them with HD vs 4K! Yaay!

- stuck at 30hz refresh rate though, so no gaminghereswhatidid

youtube and netflix already steams 4K content. Youtube in all territories as for netflix it's isp dependant though they plan on full supported 4k stream sometime in 2014.
- youtube can barely stream HD smoothly... let along 4k.inteliboy

Can't wait for some 8K porn.

I think this is all in an effort to charge more for bandwidth.
Beyond the content creation part (my God, my clients dont' want to pay for 720p and are quite happy with standard dvd res). I can only imagine what 4k would be like!
Obviously this is where it is all going, but I am not convinced that's a good thing. The TV is impressive when you see it in person, but ONLY for the crazy details in the sample footage. The movies tend to look like an HDR photo (not really, but that's how it 'feels' to me - to digital, no cinematic feeling, all too "perfect").

LG is the tech leader in TV screen shit. they manufacture for most of the brands... is there a difference. sony doesnt make its tech anymore?

so my New HD camera obsolete to 4k?
http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attribut…- I don't understand how it claims to be 4K but has half the res?sem

Sharp 8K TV
Kinda pointless video as you can't tell what the res is like on a lower res camera & screen but still...8k is right behind 4k.- http://filmmakermaga…sem
- and yet I watching this 360p video...Julesvm
- That's the irony - I watch on my ipad and computer, large tv rarely gets usedformed
- don’t expect a release anytime soon.akrok

Sony & FIFA To Broadcast Brazil 2014 World Cup Final In 4K Ultra HD

Maybe I'm in the wrong on this, but I know if a 4K/8K television is necessary.
Blu-ray, and broadcast both put out 1080p and 1080i, but nothing (as far as I am aware of) will put out a 4K bandwidth. From what I understand, that is currently impossible, and way too much information to pass through cable lines.
I've always been under the impression that this is all marketing bullshit.
Furthermore, no one really shoots 8K. There's digital IMAX, or perhaps a film IMAX scan, omniscans, etc.

It is marketing crap and will make it a massive headache for content creators. I can hear it now "hey, can you make our animation that 4k thing? I want to show it really big"
"Uh, yeah, but it'll cost you"
"Why?, that's the new normal"Thankfully it'll be many, many years before this becomes ubiquitous, if it ever does (I don't see anyone using Blu-ray anymore, I don't even bother on my player).
Most will just stream and watch on whatever is in front of them, monitor, ipad, etc.It does look pretty sweet, but Sony's highend TV's always look sweet.

fadein11, how is nothing what I've said is true? I've worked at broadcast networks, and none of them in the US do anything past 1080i. Where is your evidence?
- mg330
I'm not sure if anyone posted this, but Netflix is currently testing 4K capability. It sounds like they shot house of cards and 4K but compressed for a lower format. In the future they might stream the 4K format.

As soon as the old coax cable is completely replaced with fibre optic cable, a transition that's been happening for awhile, 4K TV will be ready to mainstream. Companies like FiOS do this and the bandwidth they offer is impressive because of it. It's only a matter of time before the archaic cable bottleneck is finally put to rest.
- I'd agree with this. But fiber is unfortunately still years behind in the US.twooh
- Exactly my point.monospaced
- weren't we excited about fiber about 14 years ago??formed
- I enjoyed FiOS for awhile, and I can see it spreading in NYC and in other cities.monospaced

Only time we've shot in 4k (well actually 5k) was so we have resolution to play with in the online for vfx. And even then we always finish to HD.
4k in 5 years time be the norm? Doubt it. 8k? Big costs. Dinosaur broadcasters. Diminishing returns. Slow broadband. No way, not happening.
- it's already happening thoughmonospaced
- yep - already happening.fadein11
- where? how? in some random city to broadcast a one-off football game? doesn't count.inteliboy
- It's actually happening in every major city, and most minor cities, in the United States.monospaced
- Have you not heard of Verizon FiOS? Most of the US has a pure fibre optic option already.monospaced
- Most Netflix content is available in 4K, streaming, right this moment.monospaced

I don't see it happening either. Not anytime soon. For now, it is a good discussion and marketing (just look at this thread, if there wasn't a big advertising push for "4k", no one would care or talk about it).
Cable is the big limiting factor. I just saw my Comcast bill...$189! Fuck (I need to call about that). That's just insane, imho, and I can see more and more cutting the cord altogether and only using the cell coverage, which would limit things even more.

Ironically, fibre optic cable is already the backbone of the entire TV system already, good to go with enough bandwidth for 4K. Unfortunately, that last bit of cable that runs from the backbone to your livingroom, maybe 50 ft or so, is the bottleneck. The push to replace these last remnants is happening, but it's a slow and hard battle. It will happen though, not just to make 4K tv happen, but to give people more bandwidth, period, because that's where things are headed.
