Ironically, fibre optic cable is already the backbone of the entire TV system already, good to go with enough bandwidth for 4K. Unfortunately, that last bit of cable that runs from the backbone to your livingroom, maybe 50 ft or so, is the bottleneck. The push to replace these last remnants is happening, but it's a slow and hard battle. It will happen though, not just to make 4K tv happen, but to give people more bandwidth, period, because that's where things are headed.
