Yeah, it'll happen. Google's fiber looks promising. It remains to be seen how long, though. Cable companies have been doing a masterful job of stagnating everything and making a butt load in the process. I can't see their power diminishing anytime soon.

fadein, you really need to stop displaying misinformation as fact.
Most films are not over 2K. They are 35mm scans, In fact, having to go 4K would mean having to rescan most 35mm masters to fit 4K+, and sometimes that process gets iffy.

Phones could shoot 4k right now if manufacturers wanted. No doubt this will happen next year. Camera's are not the issue, it's broadcast and broadband. You're pretty damn lucky in most parts of the world to stream Youtube nice and smoothly, let alone HD Youtube... or 8k Youtube! Seriously.

@twooh - I think you may need to do some research.
not all films are shot on 35mm these days and even if they are they could easily be scanned at 4K resolution.
Aside from that a lot of films are now being shot purely digital and trust me the raw files are way higher than 1080.
1080 may be the norm in your world but a wider view suggests otherwise and will only continue to change - called progress.

@twooh:
"Film is analog so there are no real "pixels." However, based on converted measures, a 35mm frame has 3 to 12 million pixels, depending on the stock, lens, and shooting conditions. An HD frame has 2 million pixels, measured using 1920 x 1080 scan lines. With this difference, 35mm appears vastly superior to HD."

"That's just 35mm film. Pros don't shoot 35mm, they usually shoot 2-1/4" or 4x5."
At the same rates, 2-1/4" (56mm square) would be 313 MP, and 4x5" (95x120mm) would be 95 x 120 = 11,400 square millimeters = 1,140 MP, with no Bayer Interpolation. A digital camera with Bayer Interpolation would need to be rated at better than 2 gigapixels to see things that can be seen on a sheet of 4x5" film."
