Long post but some of you might enjoy reading all this. For those that asked about the app I've been, using, Lose It!, here are some screenshots and explanations of some of the key features.

Daily Calorie Totals - Shows what your budget is, what you've consumed, what you've burned off, how much is left.

Daily Calorie Totals with Week View - Shows what you've consumed per day and a running total of how low/high you are against your target.

Daily Nutrients - Shows what you've consumed per day and where you are against the weekly average.

Nutrients - Shows the breakdown of fat, carbs, and protein. I use this one a ton to make sure I'm getting my ideal percentage of protein per day. Shows the per-day breakdown for that week.

Daily / Weekly Goals - Show's where you are against goals including nutrient percentage and total amounts. Includes weight goals, body fat goals, step goals, workout minutes, workout calories, etc.

Protein breakdown per day - Green line show target, blue bars show progress per day against that target. The protein target can be hard, mainly because I've found a lot of protein comes with more carbs than I want.

Daily Food Log - Allows for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks, Exercise, and Notes. Can add food / ingredients manually, or using bar codes. All things that are entered are stored for reuse.

Weight Goal Tracking - Basically, you enter your existing weight, and enter a goal weight. Then you choose what you want to try and lose per week: 2 lbs, 1 1/2 lbs, 1 lb, .5 lbs. I'm sure you can do weight gain as well. You can also choose to maintain current weight. I just manually enter my weight every morning. That's it.

Here's what the weight goal UI looks like.

As far as tracking workouts, I use a trio of apps (I don't know why they don't combine into one) called MotiFIT, MotiFIT Run, and MotiFIT Ride. The Polar heart rate monitor app doesn't work with it's own product because of a bug. Hilarious. The MotiFIT apps are nicely designed and sync with the HR monitor.

That's a post-workout view of heart rate, calories burned, and average heart rate.

    Here's a cycling view, post-ride.

And overall details from cycling. The running app does the same thing.

I also use Strava when cycling because the UI is much nicer and it tracks "segments" of your rides, so you can see progress against beating those segment times. Really cool. Both cycling apps are just using the GPS for distance / speed; I don't have a computer on my bike this year (but next year I will).

It took me a while to figure out how all of this needs to connect to prevent data overwriting, and to ensure I'm using the same apps for calorie burn tracking and heart rate. It's basically doing this:

MotiFIT: I track all weight workouts and indoor cardio heart rate with this. It pushes to the Nike Health app's Workouts section.

MotiFIT Run and Ride: I track running and biking with these for heart rate, speed, distance, etc. They are imported into the MotiFIT app, and do not push to Nike Health.

Strava: I only use Strava for cycling but don't use the heart rate and calorie data, because even though it shows heart rate, it doesn't use it to calculate calorie burn (weird). I basically use Strava for the distance tracking and segments, and nicer UI design.

Nike Running: I only track running distance / pace / speed with Nike Running, because I've been using this for years and have a lot of data saved on it. It syncs with heart rate, too.

    KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE.

    • thats cool, i used it in the past, but entering everything i eat had become a boring task and i was all nervous when i forgot a day. But its a good app.Ben99
    • That's pretty awesome! In May I weighed 188. I'm down to 160, looking to get down to 155 and maintain. I feel wonderful and have more energy than ever.kona
    • This app might help me lose those last 5 pain in the ass pounds.kona
    • Awesome Kona! You and I talked about this stuff in person YEARS ago. I'm so happy with what I'm achieving.mg33
    • Ben - I simply can't go to bed if I've not entered everything. I pretty much do it as I'm eating. It's true about habits forming. I'd go nuts if I skipped one.mg33
    • But I wish the app had a "screw it" meal where you could acknowledge you ate something terrible, but couldn't total up the nutrients.mg33
    • Kona - are you taking a fat burner at all? I'm having great success from Myokem Pyroxamine. I also use their pre-workout product.mg33

    my thing is soups, lately.

butternut squash is easy– cube a bigass squash, sautee it with a diced onion and some garlic till soft, add a bunch of broth (i often make mine by boiling pulp i freeze after juicing stuff), add whatever spices you want (i've been doing sage, a lil nutmeg, some garam masala). puree to the consistency you like.

does anyone do it? any tips?

    • But really, I used to do it once a week. One thing I'd suggest is wear more clothes if you go out, your body gets cold far more easily when fasting.set

Got back to good habits on January 1st and have gone from 175 to 164.5 in 2 1/2 months. Regular exercise with weights and Peloton, and a really good full body superset fat burning working have been great.

I also did a DEXA body composition scan and RMR test back in December, which helped me properly recalibrate macros and better understand maintenance calories and deficit calories for fat burning. Interestingly, that showed that my maintenance calories should be around 2,100 calories per day. I usually was eating around 1,700.

For January I stuck to 2,100 and actually lost around 5 lbs that way just avoiding sugar and eating what I needed to fuel my workouts. Then went to 1,700 until hitting my goal this week, now back at 2,100 and around 175g of protein a day. Also introduced carbs back in - rice, oatmeal, and wheat bread mostly, which I was avoiding when doing slow carb.

The nutritionist I met with really stressed that I probably haven't been eating right to fuel daily energy and workouts, and I've felt a lot better with that stuff back in AS LONG AS it doesn't make me crave sugar.

Lastly, gave up coffee and all caffeine this week, for like the fifth time in my life. Longest I've gone was 3 years... I never learn my lesson. Main problem for me with caffeine is skin issues. Caffeine exacerbates stress which exacerbates cortisol which is a massive problem for my skin and avoiding acne, which completely sucks to have as a 43 year old man. I'm also just a nicer person without caffeine in me, more calm, more even-keeled. Now I'm just doing rooibos tea and mint tea all day, and starting each day with a homemade smoothie that has kale, pineapple, mango, bananas, flaxseed, chia seeds, avocado, coconut water, and protein powder. About 440 calories and it's all good for me.

I started out by reading and applying the teachings of a low-carb book (The Food Hourglass) (great book, changed my life) and getting immediate results. Than I reached a plateau circa 5kg above my ideal weight. I slacked off and dragged those 5 kg around on my belly for a couple of years. I kept drinking alcohol quite regularly and cheated on carbs a lot. But I could always reach the plateau again by cutting carbs for a while.

Now I progressed to healhy KETO + intermittent fasting.
I do 20:4 or OMAD during the week, relaxing it to 18:6 or 16:8 on weekends .. once in a while I have treat day (parties, hanging with friends.. )

Once a month I'm doing a 48h fast. Every couple of months I'll do an even longer fast. Just because of the health benefits, not for losing weight. Longer fasts are the only true detox.

A couple of times a week I do some light exercise before I break my fast (an hour of light cycling mostly, sometimes swimming ) I'm planning on adding a bit of calisthenics, only to get some muscle tone without spending money.

Once you get adjusted 20:4 is easypeasy, as is OMAD. I try to finish eating by 4 or 5 pm so my bloodsugar is normal by the time I go to bed, so I sleep like a rose now. I didn't really have sleeping problems, but I did used to wake up with a foggy brain or even get out of bed tired, even though I just slept for 8 hours. Probably because my body was busy digesting all night long from late night drinks and snacks. Once you put anything in your mouth, your body needs 8 or 9 hours to regulate bloodsugar to normal levels. That's a loooong ass time your body can't recuperate because it's busy digesting. Think about that before you snack or drink or booze in the evenings. I wake up completely sharp now and feel great.

I will still drink alcohol when I'm friends.

sugar cravings have stopped after a week or so.

of all the channels on YouTube dedicated to this, I found Dr. Sten Ekberg's to be the most accurately explain the science behind it all. It's a treasure trove of information, and actually fits lock and key with the food hourglass.

This one on carb reduction is also very informative
    https://www.youtube.com/c/DrDanM…

and this is one is also very enjoyable and full of info
    https://www.youtube.com/user/dre…

The dude has a nice keto recipe channel also
    https://www.youtube.com/channel/…

I like this guy also. He really knows every effin molecule in your body I think (which is a bit much for me and my personal goals) Still, you're gonna learn for him also.
    https://www.youtube.com/c/Thomas…

To top it off, this girl also has a great channel about all things KETO + IF
    https://www.youtube.com/channel/…

the more you get yourself informed on all this, the better you'll understand how your body works, and you'll also get better at spotting video's on YouTube that are just trying to jump on the trend.

I use an app to track my fasts and eating windows, very handy. It comes with water intake tracking, weight tracking etc

Because I haven't been doing it for that long I also use a nutrition app to calculate my calories and percentages of fats, carbs and protein in my diet. I 'm sure after a while you can more or less just wing it when you're cooking and not obsess about the perfect percentage ratio or the amount of calories. For now it's just fun for me to log everything and see what I'm actually stuffing in my body.

On top of all of this I'm a vegetarian, so it's a bit different for me because I don't have access to protein and fats from meat or fish, so that's where the nutrition app comes in handy also.

Anyway, it works great for me. I feel great, lost all the weight I wanted, I'm mentally sharp, I have plenty more free time because I don't have to spend it preparing and eating food (and cleaning), I don't feel hungry at all, I'm not constantly tempted by snacks...

The only thing that makes it a bit hard is the social setting, where everybody thinks you're weird for not constantly eating. So I don't really talk about it.

Well, there you go, check it out, learn from the pro's, get carbcutting and fasting. If you're at all struggling with weight, health, it'll change your life.

    SOBER'TOBER!
I'm going to attempt a sober October. It's going to be hard. I've been drinking everyday for years. Just an IPA at lunch and/or 2 at happy hour... a few during a football game or soccer match. Its starting to add up. I'm not at a Leaving Las Vegas level of alcoholism but I think my craft beer "hobby" is disguising my dependence. Plus I'm 25 lbs over my ideal weight.
I took 3 months off about 2 years ago and lost about 15 lbs but I gained it all back and I've been drinking more then I did then.
Wish me luck. I'm going to need it.
