Great now kids in the 3rd world can have that mindless "Touch here to receive entertainment" mentality that first world kids are developing.
If I had kids I'd never give them tablets, they can learn how to use a computer properly or not at all.

you make your living on a computer, but kids from Africa can't have the same education and opportunities?
- bulletfactory0
^ exactly - how else will they instagram?
- qTime0
I bet this thing costs more than a teachers wages there.

food is a short term solution. education changes their future.
- lol, ever tried studying hungry,
but I totally agree with youGeorgesII - smart but deadmoldero
- If you studied fed, you did it wrong.shaft
- Are you serious shaft?
I don't think they have the luxury to chose when is better to have a full belly..GeorgesII - that whole hierarchy of needs thing comes into play here http://en.wikipedia.…monNom

grumpy people... thanks to projects like this, kids in primary school in the 3rd world can buy a laptop for U$20.
- not having a computer is a 1st world problemmoldero
- do you believe the same about cell phones?monkeyshine
- not having access to education and information is a global problem.monkeyshine
- do you really think it's a lack of information that's holding back development in Africa?monNom

I support an org called 10x10 (http://10x10act.org/) and though it focuses on educating girls globally, the stats are pretty powerful. For example:
when 10% or more girls go to school, the national gdp goes up on average 3% (that's huge).
educated girls are 50% more likely to immunize their children
...they tend to marry later and have fewer children...crops rise, etc.

How rich does one have to be to not be able to imagine thirst or hunger, to think "awe, he doesnt have an iPad? poor indigenous black villagers, they must be dying of boredom? I bet they don't even have their own swimming pool, they probably all have to share one"
- I think you're being a little short sighted. Not like it's a campaign to give ipads rather than food.monkeyshine
- maybe I am, but that $ and energy could be put elsewhere, like mono said, pen and papermoldero
- then invest in agricultural infrastructuremoldero
- or more clean wells, ive worked on a water documentary, so i know this is a big problem down theremoldero
- if not the biggestmoldero
- totally agree but it's a multi-faceted problem. Education is imperative to change the cycle of poverty (see my stats above).monkeyshine
- true true, but iPads?moldero
- why not? it's a tablet that is a great educational tool? Who cares whether it's an ipad or a surface...if it works.monkeyshine
- what's wrong with a piece of paper?monospaced

of course clean water, food and a healthy environment comes first, this is not about that, these ate the basic needs for any human being.
but you can't change a nation future without culture and education.
- ********0
that's not amazing, try to find out what are the real things in life.

@chrisRG
"...you can't change a nation future without ... education."This is very, very true. Would never argue with that. I think my problem here is that jumping to tablets in the 3rd world classrooms might be overkill when learning the alphabet is just as easy with a chalkboard and paper (y'know, like how we learned). Battery life, internet costs, hardware replacements are the cost for being able to drag your finger across a screen to simulate a crayon. Just doesn't make complete sense the way it's being shown.

The reason for computers over paper? You are assuming that these kids have educated teachers to teach them. Many do not. Technology is the great equalizer in this case. It empowers kids and their families. There have been studies done on people with cell phones (for some reason those are more prevalent that you might think) and how people use them.
While an ipad isn't going to be the great savior in and of itself, don't dismiss technology as an imperative tool in helping these communities turn their world around.

Sadly these same kids will grow to fight wars and die and or become pirates.

Here's a pretty extensive article on this topic, if interested. http://impactofinformationsystem…

it's sad to see the place where life began is the poorest part of the world.
- Life didn't begin in Africa, and we're not wholly sure any more that modern humanism did either.detritus
- er... to totally abuse the word 'humanism' there.detritus
- well not life, but homo habilis/erectus...chrisRG
- Strong evidence that modern humans did originate on the continent of Africa.monospaced
- detrius. it did.ohhhhhsnap
