The reason for computers over paper? You are assuming that these kids have educated teachers to teach them. Many do not. Technology is the great equalizer in this case. It empowers kids and their families. There have been studies done on people with cell phones (for some reason those are more prevalent that you might think) and how people use them.
While an ipad isn't going to be the great savior in and of itself, don't dismiss technology as an imperative tool in helping these communities turn their world around.
