Surprised this isn't a thread already.
So folks here are doing really well huh?As for me... after working for 2 years at a company they decided to fire me because it, as they said, "just isn't working out." They said that I was producing poor work that wasn't aligned with their org; but in real, I KNOW they fired me because of my politics. A great deal of discrimination came thru in their language on their part during the course of my time there.
So now I'm in the dug out... I could go for legal action but I can't imagine that headache. Seeking another bread-and-butter on the side of my freelance work, which is actually going well.
Waiting for unemployment to investigate why I was fired (its been about 4 weeks and waiting), does it usually take a long while... does anyone know?
- doesnotexist0
it's always politics.
why go through the hassle of an investigation? do you want to go back to work there?
- ohhhhhsnap0
good point doesnotexist. no but the type of discrimination i faced there because of who i am in the world... well, i kind of want to "teach them a lesson" that it's not OK.
i'll check out moveon, i actually know of them but it has been a while since checking out their site. they just did a redesign right?
- it's NOT ok. HR has strict guidelines on WHY someone can get fired, and THAT's a huge no-nomonospaced
- Go fucking balls out. Cry if you have to. Make a case. This is such bullshit and very, very highly illegal.monospaced
- mg330
Why did they know anything about your politics?
- < exactlyshellie
- i don't have to say a word. i kinda wear it on my sleeve.ohhhhhsnap
- zoozoo0
they hated you because of your political position?
- mg330
"Who you are in the world..." That could be a million things so some context would help us out.
- monospaced0
You most definitely SHOULD pursue legal action. This happened to someone I know recently and they ended up with 6 months severence salary. No action is just like letting them know they can discriminate.
- curious... what's their story, be vague if you can't put their business up here.ohhhhhsnap
- they wanted to fill her position with one of their friends, so told her she had to resign based on bad performancemonospaced
- but her performance was good, she had great reviews, and when HR found out they flipped their lidsmonospaced
- basically, they tried to go around HR and push her out. not coolmonospaced
- capn_ron0
I agree with monospaced. I know someone who was fired under false accusations and got a hefty severance pay. If there is something there you should bring it up.
- i do too. their accusations were indeed false. hmm... thanks all. i think i know what i need to do.ohhhhhsnap
- monospaced0
What you need to do is dig up any evidence of your job performance. If they thought your work was not good, then there should be ample documentation from your superiors who review your work. If you find that after every project they are saying your work is sub-par, then they might have a case, but I have a feeling you were doing just fine. There are proper ways to fire someone for bad performance, and it's NOT just telling them they're fired. It's a process because companies have to try to improve employees before letting them go. If you truly believe it's just their excuse, then make the case.
- capn_ron0
glad you feel the same way. Talk with a lawyer to figure out the best plan of action.
- monospaced0
Dont' worry about paying the lawyer. They will have to pay those fees as well (if you're right). It's extremely important to document your performance before doing anything. First thing you have to do is go to HR and have a long, candid conversation.

HR folks love to do internet searches on prospective employees. When they find out you sued your last company, they take turns pissing on your resumé, then go for drinks.
- the spots that i work for, will actually LOVE me for it. believe it or not.ohhhhhsnap
- if you're wondering. i work within social justice orgs almost exclusively.ohhhhhsnap
- ohhhhhsnap0
Yeah Monospaced, I recieved no warning.
My work was highly praised by my coworkers, I have a bit of documentation. It's the Exec. Director who had a problem with me from day 1. She was actually pretty gross, I dealt with a little bit of sexual harassment BUT that's incredibly hard to prove for it to hold up in court in NYC. Glad to be gone, it was a pretty toxic environment where I was often in earshot of offensive anti-LGBTQ shit from coworkers who were close with the ED outside of work.
What's keeping me sane though... I am collaborating with some orgs who truly feed my soul + do good work in the world! Yes!... but yeah... I want to make sure that she n' her higher ups know that it wasn't OK.
Man! I wasn't expecting all this support (kind of new on this forum; after a 3yr hiatus at least... the temperature has changed! Or maybe I got in on a good spirited night ;) Ha!
So so appreciated, you all.
- they did can me with 2wks pay tho. fishy.ohhhhhsnap
- 2wks pay? That's more of an insult no?biusness

best revenge is to live well. All they did was make your next job better. draw a line under it. Get out as much positives as you can. move on.
- Nice Buddha outlook, and I so hear where you're coming from. But what about a kind of justice?ohhhhhsnap
- the only way they'll know it wasn't ok is if you do something about itmonospaced
- I will. I'll update this thread in a few months when I have a final outcome... so amp't by the support. Thank you!ohhhhhsnap
- if the courts dont work out... explore the voodoo curse option.Al_dizzle
- My brother went through this to the end and got nothing. They accused him os sexually harassing the boss. All he did was have lunch with her once. But if you want to see how low human beings can become. enjoy.sothere

I just got laid off yesterday from a studio I've been looking to get out of for months... It feels like I got dumped by a girlfriend I've always hated.
- ROFL, perfect way to describe it! Congrats... yet I know it must feel a little weird. Never a way to prep for it eventho u want it.ohhhhhsnap

For a better tomorrow.

You never know what could happen with a well worded letter on a high priced firms letterhead. Often a simple letter won't actually cost you too much and you might not have to go any further.
Sounds like you could sue them for discrimination as well as wrongful termination.
Big $$$$$$$'s that will hurt them even if you end up giving the money to your lawyer's and your favourite causes.
- Amicus0
It might not hurt to try and research some firms who have done work with organisations in that area and won – ie. have been on the plaintiffs side in LGBT discrimination cases.
- monNom0
sleep on it. find a new job. And if, after a few months, you still feel wronged enough that you need to pursue it. Go for it.
A little fresh air and time away will help your objectivity.

you probably have contacts in your 'industry' that'll be able to give advice and help... let us know how it goes.
