Police officers are very friendly too, check out this CCTV video showing how they came to rescue some of the cartel's prisoners to set them free!

wow. i'm bumping this unhelpful thread i guess.
I am planning a trip to Mexico for the end of the year-- going to spend about 3 months down there. I'm thinking in the City and maybe in the Yucatan... like Playa Del Carmen. Just cause I have a couple friends from there.
Any recommendations or ideas of places to go and things to see? (Don't bother telling me the places I *shouldn't* go, that is probably too long of a list to bother with.)
I work in nonprofits and will probably be doing some volunteering. I have a couple of connections to that work, but if you guys happen to know any other places I might get connected to, that'd be dope.

oaxaca is a must, my favorite place
touristy shit:
puerto escondido for surfer action
taxco of course, ditto san cristobal de las casasthe city will burn your throat something rotten
but really, go to guatemala instead, so much more interesting and foreign
- health warning: i went years ago so these places are probably horrid by nowhans_glib
- thanks!sarahfailin

I've been to Mexico a handful of times, years ago.
Cabo is touristy...did not enjoy too much.
Tijuana is sketchy, and I kinda like that. Donkeys painted like Zebras. Buy Xans at the farmacia.
Saw a dead guy stabbed, naked in the street in Rosarito. Lots of good parties there on the beach. Don't try to take girls back to your hotel. The front desk will cockblock you if they don't have a wristband for the hotel.
Fun strip clubs in Ensenada. Also good fish tacos.
- damn. who stabs a dead guy? dick move.sarahfailin
- Sorry wrong wording...he died apparently from the stabbing.sublocked

Honeymooned in Tulum.
http://www.mayanbeachhouse.comUsed AirBnB to rent this place, which was infinitely better than having a suite in a beach resort. Renting a 3000+ sqft home with a private pool and access to miles of private beach was amazing. It sleeps 6+, but it was just the 2 of us.
Renting a car, dropping by the grocery store for food, and visiting the sites on our own leisurely timeline was so much better than a vacation package.
We didn't have to see anyone the whole time if we didn't want to, except for the 2-person staff who came by each morning to quickly tidy up and skim the pool. Had the amenities come to us: masseuses, private chefs, yoga instructor (who brought weed too), etc. I highly recommend renting this home if you ever want a getaway for you and your friends/family.

hey! so it's getting closer to me-quitting-my-job time and plans have materialized.
One thing that i'm going to do is meet up w/ people in Cabo Pulmo to go scuba diving. I will get there early, since I'm gonna be in Mex from Nov til Feb, and I need to get Open Water Certified for scuba.
The only person I know is in Mexico is moldero... but if anyone has any recommendations about San Jose del Cabo or Cabo Pulmo, I'd love to hear. thanks!
- I know a dive master in cabo, really cool kid from Germany, he's really big into spear fishing too, I can hook you upmoldero

- Thanks moldero! Want my email address? Does he do scuba cert classes? My friends are more experienced divers-- i'm sure they'd love a local guidesarahfailin

One of the best restaurants in the world allegedly.- I saw this on Netflix's Chef's Table. Looks like it's about $100 for a 6 course meal-- would probably be very interesting!sarahfailin

I'd also take any recommendations for the Yucatan, which is where I'll be spending the rest of my time. I'd love to find a permaculture farm to work on, or some other beautiful hippy commune...

The best time of the year in Mexico is right now (after the spring break nightmare) till mid June, perfect weather, empty beaches, very attentive staff everywhere and A LOT less hustlers out because all the tourists are gone.
just don't tell anyone else!

So now the Sinaloa Cartel is forcing tourists driving in from the states to carry large amounts of cash for them, and if their cash doesn't make it though all the checkpoints, they kill you.
not a good time to come to Mexico especially if you're driving.
Also the Sinaloa Cartel used to have a rule, just stick to trafficking, they weren't into kidnapping and extortion as much as the other cartels like thew Zetas, but I got word last week from some friends who live in Culiacan: 'that rule is out the window' and they're ramping up kidnapping and extortion.
No bueno.
- Innovation sleeps with the fishesPhanLo
- These young kids coming up dgaf. sad bro. I was planning to take my whole family to CDMX this Summer but F that.HijoDMaite
- bleeding heck, sounds like mexico is heading down the haitian way of lifehans_glib
- I obviously don't live there, but I've read that CJNG is smoking the Zetas and taking over norte states. Any truth to that?garbage
- Grew up with kids from Mexicali and Ixtapa. Pretty sure a lot of their family still live there.garbage
- @hijo I'm sure you know about the Jalisco indoctrinations. Those kids don't have a chance to ever be sane.garbage
- Hmmm I'm in Mexico right now should I be worried? :) How and where do they usually kidnap people?yuekit
- I forget the road number, but there's a road north that's nicknamed "Highway of Death". They jacked so many tourist buses that it's avoided.garbage
- I recall seeing protests about the abducted/murdered students in Mexico City years ago. Apparently some of the investigators searching for their bodiesyuekit
- also disappeared recently, pretty fucked up.yuekit
- Where are you at?garbage
- Cancun/ Playa del Carmen/ Tulum region, so I assume not very dangerous at all.yuekit
- ^ Zetas there, don't venture too deepYakuZoku
- The police are out in force here walking around with guns and drug sniffing dogs.yuekit
- Plot twist: They're looking for you.garbage
- lol, I actually did get stopped once but talked my way out of it.yuekit
- the cops lately have been asking tourists if they have US dollars and taking it saying "its counterfeit" so hide your cashYakuZoku
- it's corrupt as fuck down hereYakuZoku
- when I drove in with my new truck last month EVERY checkpoint asked me if i had US dollars for that reason, luckily i don't carry US cashYakuZoku
- and they searched the fuck out of me, emptied my pockets, took apart parts of my truck too, it was shittyYakuZoku
- idiots still didn't find my weed vape cartridge though, they checked everything except for a grocery bag I had on the passenger seat ;)YakuZoku
- NONE of the checkpoints checked that bag lolYakuZoku
- oh and weed is supposedly decriminalized but the cops think we dont know that, so they will harass the shit out of you and try to get a bribe if they find itYakuZoku
- I buy my weed down here from a Lifeguard/Cop lolYakuZoku
- BTW beware of lifeguards, they're also cops in most cases, unless they're lifeguards on private propertyYakuZoku
- I gave my dealer my old Dodge Ram truck to stay on his good sideYakuZoku
- I surf with his girlfriend and recently she told me he's addicted to Cocaine and to not be surprised if he sells it for cokeYakuZoku
- i try and help a brotha out and yeah...YakuZoku
- Yeah the status of weed is confusing and there are all these shops here selling edibles openly, then various other products behind the scenes (vapes etc).yuekit
- Holy fucking shit, is that the Ram you were worried about crossing the border with?garbage
- "Cancun/ Playa del Carmen" I been to that part of Mexico yuekit, many years ago. I went snorkeling, it was rad. I think this part of Mexico shouldn't be toocherub
- kidnappy. Just look at poor as possible, wear your worst clothes and don't speak at all, or draw attention.cherub
- Right I've spent a lot of time here and the day to day experience is about as far as you can get from scary or dangerous... beautiful beaches, resorts etcyuekit
- At the same time apparently there is drug trafficking going on beneath the surface, and cartels moved into this region over the past decade, which I guessyuekit
- explains the degree of police/ military presence.yuekit
- @garbage no the RAM is my old truck, my new one is an F-150 4x4, but ive been told the cartel carjacks nice 4x4's to use up in the mountains for their operationYakuZoku
- my new truck it a bit much for down here, but I couldn't pass up the deal, it was a $71k truck with $20k of add-ons I got for $21kYakuZoku
- i'll keep you guys posted when it finally gets jacked lolYakuZoku
- flol Dios mio, pics pls.garbage
- https://www.qbn.com/…YakuZoku
- Looks like I already did a drive by on it, but I remember it now. Sick whip.garbage
- thanks man, now if i could only keep it lolYakuZoku
- Do you think it's actually at risk?garbage
- so I've been toldYakuZoku

always go to a foreign currency exchange and look up the best trade value and buy Pesos , have Pesos in your pocket before you land or cross over, there are some cities towns that will not take U.S dollars. Debit/Credit cards will work, might need to check with your Bank if they need to unblock it for foreign transactions ,
- DolarApp is the best app I used in Mexico. https://www.dolarapp…zaq
