With absolutely no suggestion from me, my two boys (12 & 11) have discovered and fallen in love with The Simpsons. They discovered it by watching YouTube shorts and now we quote lines and scenes together, play games naming as many characters as we can, and they laugh their asses off at all the right things. They get it, and it makes me so damn proud.

Today my son brought me a popsicle as I worked in the yard.

My son is 14 and pretty independent now, would rather ride bikes with his mates than with his old man (which I get) so we needed a new hobby to bond over.
I bought a second hand racing go kart and we are back! It’s so fun to be hanging out in the garage again. We are fixing it up but it’s a little too fast at the moment, might have to put in a restrictor to keep it under 100km/hr / 60mph. It’s off its head, I had no idea.
Hopefully we get another 3 or 4 summers in before he starts adulting.
- 60mph!! Christ... My lad is 17 and a half now. It doesn't take long until they're a mini adult... I'd do anything for one day with him when he was 2/3 years oldcruddlebub
- Me too. Thankfully I remember all the fun and joy and not much of the second job that is being a PA to a toddler.slappy
- In 3 or 4 summers move on to 50s Chevy Gasser buildsprophetone
- I could get into something like that. Vintage US cars are a bit thin on the ground in Aus, maybe an old Valiant though with a big turbo V8 might be fun.slappy

Final update for the karting story. We had our first competitive race meeting on the weekend, with kids coming from some of the larger tracks around to compete in our class (KA100 light).
I gave him the pep talk, take it easy, we are just learning, no pressure etc and sent him out.
Heat 1 — He started in 3rd and finished 2nd (random grid).
Heat 2 — Started 7th finished 2nd (random grid)
Heat 3 — It started to rain and he started 12th (random grid). Most kids scrambled back to the pits to put on wet tyres but we chose to stay on slicks and see what happens. He drove from last place to 2nd place through the field in 8 laps.
Final — Started 3rd (based on points from the heats) and put in the fastest laps and was leading the race by lap 4 and took home the win. I very nearly cried as all the locals rallied around him.
- Love this. Well doneBonSeff

Some time ago, I shared about my son’s passion for music and his first release with a label: https://www.qbn.com/reply/411018…
Since then, he has become even more dedicated to music.Yesterday, he made me proud again.
He received a letter that he was accepted to NYU for Music Production with a scholarship!I’ve seen how hard he worked to get there. The Clive Davis Institute is highly competitive, with only about 7–8% of applicants accepted.
It’s still a big decision. Even with a partial scholarship, the cost is significant, and AI is changing creative fields, including music.
But I believe that his passion will help him to figure out his path and adapt as things evolve.
Here is his Creative sample that he submitted to NYU
- Awesome!!cruddlebub
- This is an impressive portfolio, showing both creative and social talent. Connecting with the rich and ambitious at NYU could be fruitful. Good luck!pusherbot
- Thank youzaq
- As long as they're passionate about something... all you hope for as a parent. Fully support that passion.falcadia

What’s up party people! Quick update on a huge blessing. I’m so proud of my youngest daughter. She graduated from UC Irvine last May with a degree in Bioscience and set her sights on Veterinary Medicine. After thousands of hours working with animals, she applied to nine programs.
She was accepted to some, denied by a few, but the big news... she got into the top two vet schools in the country: UC Davis and Cornell! She’s over the moon. As amazing as Cornell is, Davis is ranked #1 and keeps us in-state for tuition, so she’ll be starting there in August.
So proud!!
If your kids are interested in pursuing this path, let me know. I’m happy to help you navigate the process. :))
- Nice!
Good to see them follow their dreamsPhanLo - Rad! And AI won’t take that job :)monospaced

I was just at a tram stop on the way home tonight. Next to me was a dad and his two young primary school kids. The girl said “hey look it’s a full moon” and pointed at the sky. She started howling like a wolf, and her brother immediately joined in. Then the dad looked at me and he started howling too.
He’s a good dad, when he got on the tram I noticed he was wearing his girls pink back pack. Nice job dad.

Shower-bathing the daughter and I need a pee so I decide to go all Swiss-German and have a quiet sit down pee as she does her thing, except now I think I could also have a shit so do so and dear God, it reeks and now she's wincing and I'm trying not to laugh.
This one's for you, PhanLo.

My son has started a youtube channel for his karting, he's been working, saving and wrenching late into the nights with me to get his setup dialled in. He's decided he's ready to go and race competitively. Really pumped for him.

I've been worrying about compensating for my own domain lacking where my daughter's education is concerned, so had thought that a grounding in maths and logic and programming would be best.
But in this age of LLMs I realise that's redundant.
I need to focus on language, comprehension, composition of thought and the ability to abstract concepts.
I'm so fucking worried for her future.
- Teach her how to learn and foster a culture of curiosity then she will work the rest out. Maybe keep an eye on her self esteem and friend groups is my advice.slappy
- Oh yeah, I'm talking purely edumacational here, but I'm already seeing the self esteem issues beginning to peek through...Nairn
- ..but I've always been sure to enxourage that she engaged with friends as much as is comfortable, and not just focusing the same subset all the timeNairn
- Fucking mobile corrections.Nairn
- Have her learn piano. It’s great for activating all kinds of wonderful parts of the brain at once.monospaced
- I agree that in the world of corner cutters abusing ai to get through life, the ability to write well and expound on abstract concepts is critical.monospaced
- I bought her a wee piano years ago but she's not shown much interest. She's been learning violin, and I'm going to buy her a recorder this w'endNairn
- I’m so worried for their future. It’s hard to conceive of what challenges they’ll face or how I can even possibly guide them.monospaced
- What is it that she loves to do more than anything? That is the thing you raise her to do. This is a slow apocalypse — with more & more beautiful sunsets.tbgoodwillie

Happy Father’s Day.
