well, are you taking a pay cut or is it a raise?

I would say for a graphic designer that's in line. Note he didn't say Senior Designer, Art Director, ACD, CD, etc meaning this is likely not a position that oversees designers, and the position description will likely reflect this.
- akrok0
so...did you say yes or no?

What about Ottawa? Haha.

^ You won't have a car. Most rent includes all of your utilities. Living in NYC sounds tough, but once you're here you realize that a lot of expenses aren't included.

Tons of people live happily in NYC on about $85K. As hotroddy posted above, ~$4,000/mo. can be tight, but isn't unrealistic. One can rent a studio ($1,500), pay bills ($500), and have fun ($1,000 food/drink/drugs) with a little leftover for incidentals. I personally wouldn't take a lower salary, but it isn't impossible as some people have so vehemently declared.

The average income in the most expensive city in the world is about half of 85k.
- georgesIII0
Is the dollar so devaluated, I make less than half of this in Euro and I live a pretty confortable life.
is really 85k not enough?

^
why would they pay you 100k, when national average is like 50k.- ( talking in general )akrokdesign
- cause you're great and want to make a living. yes. but, they don't give a shit. (8 of 10)akrokdesign
- Salamandojo0

my point being you equate 85k with a living salary on newyork. i wonder what you call living
– deathboy5/19
the more money you think you should make the more likely you vote democratic for hand out for those people living below you
– deathboy6/19
below you
– deathboy7/19

– deathboy8/19

– deathboy9/19
there is no wage scale but those between you...ETM - oh and a bit late you might not see it ETM. but figure a response to your question is neededdeathboy
- i see a growing trend in how spoiled american culture is. the i paid my dues in college/years in work, that there is entitlement that is disconnecteddeathboy
- a sense of entitlement disconnected from worth based on such time/schooldeathboy
- how one values there worth vs how another views there worth. i see this strongly amongst self-proclaimed liberalsdeathboy
- especially in sense of healthcare and such. i purely asked as a large generalization to see if my first impression is correct. and from there narrow down correlates on a single question is quite irrelevant but could leaddeathboy
- correct and from there to see if i can narrow down my generalization to get a better grip on where the person is coming fromdeathboy
- coming from. that was my intent. tryign to simplify it in these text boxes.deathboy
- and likely i would also further question what cost of living means in comparison to the many workign for less.deathboy
- and work it back to the fact that worth is onoy relative between employee/employer and has no merit on a larger scaledeathboy
- so ETM if you see this, that was my reasoning behind itdeathboy
- monkeyshine0
How do you live on 85k/yr in NYC?

- not worth n in market demand. i think the poster by basinf merit on time and not merit tells me he sucksdeathboy
- or isnt sure how things work and is just trying to crowdsource a feel on payscale by comparitive studydeathboy
- actually monkey i can ony beleive you asked it as facetious attempt. you cant be serious. in that sense hahadeathboy
- someone is on a roll, today. lol.akrokdesign
- just some downtime before tomorrow and a lot of hate for people think entitlement on their own criteriadeathboy
- deathboy uses the incorrect form of "you're" so he must be a high-paid CD or AD.doublespaced

IN CALI: 85k = to 4,400k a month after taxes (if ur single). If you live alone your paying at least 1200 in rent/month in LA. If you have school debt, car lease, and social/food expenses your basically breaking even.
- my first car costed $1100. haha.akrok
- I thought taxes were supposed to be low in the US.monNom
- false advertising.akrok
