Another draw back of the pen cameras (the epl1 in particular) is the shot to shot. Be sure to test it in person.

The reason I passed on the Olympus when I was in the market was its cheap and plasticy feel, whereas the GF1 feels like a good solid chunk of camera. But I'm more superficial than most, I reckon.
- Hombre_Lobo0
^yeh totally.
but you are talking about the E-pl1 right? the E-p2 and E-p1 are metal body and feel quite solid.
I do agree the E-pl1 doesnt feel very nice, the buttons in particular feel cheap. but it does take excellent pics, even slightly sharper pics than the E-p1 and E-p2. This is due to its lighter AA Filter, but the difference is only small, when pixel peeping its noticeable, but otherwise not.
I do love the metal body of the GF1 and the buttons feel great, to me the feel of the GF1 is far superior than any of the pen cameras.

Im thinking about buying a m43 cam, i got about 10 old canon fd lenses sitting in a box waiting to be used!
I still hesitate between the gf2 and the gh2, I wanna use it more for filming though. Is the gf2 good for video? i know the gh2 will certainly be better but still much more expensive..
- Hombre_Lobo0
Nail on the head. GH2 is pretty much the best hybrid video cam you can get. Better than the 5D mk II for video. But it costs a lot.
I have a GF1 and one of my lenses is a canon FD 50mm macro. It's a nice lens, but I wouldn't want the body of the camera smaller, it would be awkward with large legacy glass. So if I were you I'd steer clear of the gf2. It's slightly more compact, but that's it's only benefit, and the touch screen isn't great from what I've read.
So you're interested in video? Well I think my gf1 shoots decent enough video. And you can install hacked firmware for higher bit rate video. It's completely stable. I have mine doing 33mbps as opposed to the default of (iirc) 17mbps. The quality isn't anywhere near twice as good, but it is an improvement.
- The GH2 high iso is worlds better than the GF1 and GF2 and better than all the other micro four thirds cameras.Hombre_Lobo

Also you may not know about the GH2's Extra tele conversion mode in video recording.
It's genius. It basically crops the video, zooming in about 2.3 times, but doesn't lose any quality becuase it simply uses the central pixels of the sensor to the size of 1920x1080. Which is great as every lens you have becomes 2 lenses in video :)
Ie a 20mm lens is 40mm effective (2x crop)
but it can also be used on extra tele conversion to be about 46 (92mm effective). It's such a ground breaking feature.Panasonic developed the sensor specifically for that propose, to allow it to be cropped evenly.
- how did i know i'd find you in here? ;) lolssea_sea
- You know me so well :P
how's your lovely e-pl1? And how's you??Hombre_Lobo

Thanks for your answer hombre!
I think I'll go for the gh2 then... maybe it is more expensive but im sure I wont be disappointed! gf2 seems really small, i dont really see the gf2 with a canon fd 70-210 lense :-)
nice video by the way!
- Hombre_Lobo0
^cheers mate, no problem.
The GH2 14-140mm lens is good too, it is optimised for video and has a stepless aperture for smooth changes while filming.
However it is cheaper to get the 14-45mm + the 45-200mm. They go for about £200 each and the 14-140mm goes for about £600. But you have the convenience with the 14-140mm.
Also the GH2 can shoot 40 images a second at 4mp! It's a very impressive cam.
Although I would also consider a canon t2i (550D), it will be bigger, but cheaper and the video is fantastic. But not quite as good as the GH2. But I don't know if you would notice unless they were side by side.

Before you buy you should check out this forum for micro four thirds cameras too -
http://forums.dpreview.com/forum…and look at some GH2 images, and see if you approve. You may also want to try a GH2 in a shop first before buying, obviously for ergonomics but more so for the electronic view finder. It's a very different experience to traditional DSLR's and some people just don't get on with them.

okay,
thank you for all the infos!I'm gonna check all of this out.

Atkinson why did you return your GF1 again?
i ask because i wonder if the E-pl2 OR GF3 will fix whatever you ofund lacking with the GF1.
- err0
I had the EP-1 and the auto focus was shit. Forget about having it focus in lowlight areas too.
However Olympus is now saying they have the fastest auto focus. These new line of cameras look great.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/…- the e-p3 is pointless and over priced, the E-pl3 and pen mini, look v interesting though.Hombre_Lobo
- Hombre_Lobo0
^dont be too impressed by their statement, its only a TINY TINY bit quicker than the GH2 (and as far as i know the GF3 and G3 have the same autofocus system as the GH2)
EP3 timings: http://www.imaging-resource.com/…
GH2 timings: http://www.imaging-resource.com/…but, it being as fast as the GH2, is great.
But yeh the E-p1 at launch had a slow autofocus compared to the GF1 (its competitor), but a firmware update improved it and its worth remembering that the slow AF of the oly pens is 90% due to the oly lenses. The pana lenses on the e-p1 focus quicker.
