I forget now. I buy a lot and return a lot. I think I didn't like the UI of the GF1. I'm still looking for the perfect camera but alas haven't found it!
The EPL3 / GF3 look interesting but the more I think the less I want lenses. I think I'm more a compact user that gets seduced by the IQ of a DSLR at times and gets sucked in. Recently I've considered the LX5 but the best two all rounders I've used are the S95 and the GRD3. The latter being more fun to use but less versatile.
I'd love a compact with a snap function like the Ricoh [so no AF lag at all] but with the IQ of a DSLR. Fuji have got close-ish but not close enough! Excited to see what Canon / Ricoh do next in terms of powershot /GRD.

Also, Rumors and hints from canon imply they are going to make a mirrorless camera soon -
http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/…
"Finally we can give you some mirrorless news from the Canon front! According to the Reuters agency “the world’s largest maker of digital cameras, is exploring the possibility of launching a mirrorless model, featuring many of the capabilities of an upmarket single-lens reflex camera in a more compact body, a senior company executive said.”
Masaya Maeda, head of Canon’s camera division said “We are considering the technical aspects...We will launch an interesting product next year“.
Wondering if Canon will make an ultrasmall sensor mirrorless camera like Pentax or go for APS-C. Let’s see!"
Canon would get it right first time, i think they know a little bit about cameras. and best of all given that canon make a lot of pro equipment, im hoping it will be more pro orientated, rather than new ot photography point and shooters.

Honestly I wasn't happy with the stock GH2 lens 14-42mm, it pretty much sucks. You will want a 14mm or 20mm or the 14-140mm, but not the 14-42mm. I'm happy with my 14mm, as it comes in handy for low profile work but my GH2 didn't really shine till I got my Nokton 25mm, f.95. I'm just getting the hang of it, here are some sample pics I took a couple of days ago.
- nice capture on the 3rd oneinteliboy
- Good photos, but I'm not impressed with the quality. It's either the sensor or the lens. Noisy, and just sort of soft.********
- Killer lens! For those who don't know, that is a f0.95 manual focus only...chow
- ...with a generally steeper learning curve than your typical M43 lens :)chow

Looking forward to the new Canons and the new Ricohs. For me the s100 and GRD4 but I think they'll have some decent m43 stuff too.
- ricohs are hot, with those low profile replaceable lenses, canon too expense though not many good lenses.robotron3k
- I should say, not many affordable good lenses.robotron3k

Hey y'all, I just wanted to revive this information-packed thread to see if Hombre or anyone else had any additions to the information already provided, that may have changed purchasing decisions in the last 3 months or so? I've got a similar amount to spend in the coming weeks, but I'm having trouble finding the GF1 around here (China).
How does the GF2 with 14mm pancake lens compare to the GF1 with 20mm lens? I'll be looking to start out with basic kit only, hotshoe additions etc can come later...
Cheers.

If you're in the UK jessops have the GF2 + 14-42 + 14mm for £399 which is a great price.
I just got the G3 + 20mm + 14mm [taken from the pack mentioned above] and really like it. As Hombre has mentioned previously, it is small, significantly more so than the gh2, however the gh2 wasn't small enough for me compared to say the 550d / 600d so I got the g3. The forthcoming panasonic rangefinder style cam looks interesting, as do the rumours of the G13 canon having a m4/3 sensor - could be all talk though!

The GF2 isnt too dissimilar to the GF1, its slightly smaller with less buttons and no mode dial. The gf2 also has a touch screen which is ok. The GF1 and GF2 output is near identical, so if i were you, id save some money and get a GF1, its larger, but i think the gf2 is verging on too small for comfort, the gf1 has more dials and switches and personally i think it looks nicer.
the 20mm lens is a must have too. Its crazy sharp, 2nd sharpest m43 lens as far as i know, its 2nd to the 45mm pana leica macro that costs about £600.
Also buddha bear in mind that in high iso tests the olympus pen models might look better, but the ACTUAL iso rating of the pens is a lot less. AND the actual iso rating of the GF1 is a lot higher
I.E. - GF1 @ iso 800 is actually more like 1200
and oly pen models @ iso 800 is more like 700Oly do this to make their cameras look better than they really are in tests. But in practice they both have about the same amount of noise if set to the same settings

Here you can see the actual iso here -

Ho you finding the G3? the new sensor seems to be awesome, best m43 sensor there is and the high iso seems comparable to the 600D! (but clearly the 600d has the edge)
And again to link to DXOmark the actual iso rating is quite a bit higher on the G3 than the 600d (the shutter will be quicker on the G3 to achieve the same exposure as the 600D if both set to the same iso)

G3 iso 3200 (huuuge image) -
http://www.imaging-resource.com/…600d iso 3200 (huuuge image) -
http://www.imaging-resource.com/…not a major difference. 600d is still a great cam though.

We tested out that Olympus camera and my fiance really liked it. She knows how to do basic stuff with my D90, but really wants a new camera for herself with similar features but not as big. It was cool and the display was so great.

Nikon is rumoured to be announcing some sort of mirrorless camera this month.
- Probably won't be 4/3s.********
- Nah it isn't, it has a much smaller sensor, but should be coolHombre_Lobo
- Probably won't be 4/3s.

I like it...for now!
I haven't seen the specs really I'm just going how it feels to use. Feels very fast. EVF is ok, not that into it, some horrible colour flashes in teh LCD but it works ok. Size for me is great, discreet enough but powerful too. IQ is excellent. Kit lens seems surprisingly good too. Iso is good, seems to go v high without much noise. I think the cameras being released at the moment are a real turning point in many ways.
I'm using the 14mm for street, 20mm indoors mainly and zoom around and about, works great.- Cool man, pleased you like it :)
Yeh cameras are definately at a turning point, mirrors will be a think of the past soon enough.Hombre_Lobo

Thanks for all the stats Hombre, very much much appreciated, sir. GF1 has discontinued production apparently, which sucks. Your mention of the better dials and the bigger hand-grip had me sold on the GF1 over the GF2. I'll keep looking, maybe refurb'ed or 2nd hand. If you know of any reliable vendors besides wheeeeebay, have at it.
Thanks again!!
PS. If I can't find a decent GF1, does $1100 US for a GF2 with 14mm and 20mm sound about right? That's the best I've found so far.

LX5 vs GF2Wide aperture high compacts vs micro four thirds cameras is not an easy choice for a couple of often ignored factors.
The m43 has a larger sensor, which is great BUT generally speaking if you don't buy more lenses for you micro four third camera, its often more beneficial to buy a high end compact with a wide aperture, which negates the larger sensor of the m43 and the compact will have a more versatile lens.
Firstly if it would be the LX5 vs the GF2 + 14-42mm lens.
if you had the gf3 + 14-42mm, vs the LX5, the lx5 has much better aperture throughout the entire zoom range.
Lx5 widest (24mm) is f2, and full zoom (90mm) is f3.3.
GF3 14-42mm widest (28mm) is f3.5 and full zoom (84mm) is 5.6.The larger aperture of the LX5 negates the larger sensor of the GF3 when it comes to low light performance, so if you want a zoom lens for all environments and wont buy more lenses, the LX5 is generally a better all round choice.
If you shoot in bright daylight all the time then the extra aperture of the LX5 i'snt that important, the GF2 + 14-42mm would give better quality in bright daylight thanks to the larger sensor.
LX5 vs GF2 + 14mm f2.5 pancake
fixed lens of the gf2 is 14mm (28mm equivalent) f2.5, the LX5 is wider though @ 24mm equivalent and is f2.
Now in terms of low light and noise i suspect the GF2 would be a fair bit better, its aperture is less but the sensor size would most likely put it ahead in terms of low light performance and noise.
BUT the LX5 is wider @ 24mm.

^sometimes i say gf3, meaning gf2, but they are identical anyway - especially in terms of what im comparing here.
- Atkinson0
guess what...
I'm back with the Ricoh. Just can't cope with system cams even though the IQ etc is better.
argh
- Hombre_Lobo0
^lol you love that ricoh.
your a fine example of how user experience (i suppose sentimental value too) is more important than results.
"can't cope with system cams"? You prefer the ricoh fixed lens style?
- Atkinson0
Ha yeah. IQ always sucks me in. The G3 is excellent in most regards. In summer it's fine, over shoulder and out. In winter - rain, snow, ice- don't want to carry a bag so the Ricoh is in the pocket. I'm not scared of using the ricoh in the rain, it's cheaper than the pana 20mm. Fewer options - options do my head in as you can tell. Great IQ for what it is and fantastic b/w.
£ for £ the ricoh is the best camera in the world right now!- good stuff, whatever makes you take pics!
which ricoh is it again?Hombre_Lobo - GRD3, I think the 4 will be out soonAtkinson
- good stuff, whatever makes you take pics!
