Yeah it's like the coating on a cheap ink pen.
Been teaching ten years I think, in a few places.
The 550 vids eat memory in a crazy way, decent quality though.
Images are sharp, just hoping the GH2 images are as good, though I might just get a 550.
- Hombre_Lobo_20
hmm its a tough one.
pros for 550D -
a bit cheaper.
There are loads of accessories
wide modern lens choice (with auto focus)
modern lenses are cheaper due to abundanceGH2 pros-
smaller & lighter
better video
HUGE selection of lenses - allows any four thrids lens to be used on it, even ones from the 70's
Can use very cheap manual focus lenses made for film cameras (cheap like £20!)Im guessing the GH2 will take better pics too, but who knows!
From the looks of it the GH2 produces better Video than a 60D (similar/same sensor to 550D i think) -
60D vs GH2 - http://www.eoshd.com/content/459…Tough choice

@Hombre_Lobo_2 any ideas which of the 14-42 / 14-45 pany lenses are better. the latter seems a better build with metal not plastic but in terms of IQ?
- Hombre_Lobo_20
Very good of you to notice dude.
The 14-45mm is superior in IQ and build!
How much sharper is quite subjective. I'd say it's worth paying a bit more for the 14-45mm. In all reviews it gets massive praise being very very good for a kit lens. The 14-42mm is still good but just a fraction softer when viewed at 100%
most also say the 14-45mm images seem to (I hate to sat this) 'pop' more.
- Atkinson0
Giving the GF1 a go, 14-45 +20mm.
What do you all do in terms of filter / protection? Naked or HMC Hoya?
- Hombre_Lobo_20
Really? Cool man.
Remember high iso won't be as good as your E-PL1, panasonic take a less aggressive approach to noise reduction on the GF1.
I have my hoya HMC UV filter on all the time on my 20mm (46mm filter). Don't have the 14-45.
As you wanted something small have considered the GF2?I nearly suggested the nex 5 but it's lenses are v large, great cam though.
- Hombre_Lobo_20
Infact I think my filter is hoya SHMC?
It's multi coated for less flare anyway.

I got the GF1 after consulting with Hombre, couldn't be happier, it's a lovely little camera
- Hombre_Lobo_20
Yeah jimbo!! :)
it's funny I got the GH1 and it's very nice, does very good video. But I found myself almost more drawn to the GF1.
I don't know if it was the metal body, the size, or what buy having the GH1 made me appreciate the GF1 even more.
I hope you got lots of snow pics jimbo!! :)
- Atkinson0
yeah *trying* it! Seems ok so far. Waiting to see the GH2 and GF2 in the New Year. I think GH2 is too much video for me though, I barely use film. Still drawn to the 550d though but the clarity of the 20mm pany makes me go back!
Have you ever used an equivalent to the 20mm on dslr?
- Hombre_Lobo_20
Yeh the GH2 might be a huge waste if your not into video.
Yeh man the 20mm is very sharp!! I love it :)
the equavilent on a DSLR? field of vision wise Youd be looking for something around the 27mm. Becuase The 20mm on the gf1 has an effective 40mm Fov (2x crop factor of the GF1 and all m43).So on a dslr like the 550d has a 1.6 crop
factor so a 28mm lens would be effective 42mm.you may already know all of this crop factor crap and you might have been asking more about specific lenses.
Lens wise I'm sure which lenses specifically are good sharpness.

Also one thing I discovered recently is how awesome the Pentax k-x is. It's pretty much the best at high iso in it's catergory. Better than even the 550d.
It gets rave reviews. The only thing it isn't so good for is video. Which sounds like it suits you well.
It's all smaller than your average DSLR.
And best if all you can get the body and 2 lenses new for £400!!
I'm cosidering it myself at the mo :)
- Hombre_Lobo_20
pentax k-x
its hard to get a pic showing its size, theses are ok though -
Full review -
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/…At high iso the pentax k-x appears to be better than the d500, the 500d, and fractionally better than the 550D!!
its said to be the best at high iso out of APS-C sensor cameras -
"With this performance the K-x easily beats most other APS-C cameras when shooting JPEGs, including much more expensive models. If you need better low light performance than this, going full-frame is pretty much your only option."
(http://www.dpreview.com/reviews...Pentax k-x also has image stabilization built into the camera, canon has this built into the lenses which generally speaking makes the lenses more expensive.
found this comment on a forum thread 550d vs k-x (i dont now both cameras well enough to say its 100% true) -
"Bottom line is: Overall the 550D is better as an entry level DSLR. However, if you can live with 720p without manual controls and mic input then the K-x has the edge in image quality, FPS and shutter speed."Im kinda selling this camera to myself now...VERY tempted, for 400 quid with 2 lenses!

also a good resource to compare image quality -
http://www.imaging-resource.com/…550d iso 3200-
http://www.imaging-resource.com/…K-x iso 3200
http://www.imaging-resource.com/…not much in it but the k-x is got less noise and better colour to my eyes. VERY close though.
- Atkinson0
Yeah looks a decent camera. I've read it's more of a competitor to the 500d though, with the 550d being more the K7, price wise at least. Either way though, for £400 it's a bargain!
Not into those blue bits though!
- Hombre_Lobo_20
Yeh the 550d has the incredible video, but is about pretty much in par with the k-x stills wise, which is v good.
£400 is so good I'm considering it over the GH2 and buying a seperate video camera. But I don't know if I'll get a decent video camera for the money saved.
Would like to see a side by side size comparison too.
Post some pics you've gotten with your experimental cameras dude!!
- Atkinson0
@Hombre_Lobo_2 haw are you finding the GH1 btw, for photographs, not video? Much improvement on the Gf1?
- Hombre_Lobo_20
I really like GH1 overall. But for pure image quality i'd actually rather use my GF1.
The GH1 is better at high iso, but some models suffer from banding in dark areas in hard to expose scenes, the earlier models in particular. Some users find no banding, others find loads. Of you get one made after jan 2009 you should ok, but the June July 2009 models and onward are all unhackable. The GH1 is a fair bit better at high iso though.
iQ wise, after quite thorough testing, I actually found the GF1 to produce very slightly sharper pics (in good light, remember the GH1 is better high iso), both jpeg and Raw, which is strange becuase most reviews say the opposite. But if you look at samples you can see the GF1 is slightly sharper with better contrast. This discovery was rather dissapointing which is why I returned the Gh1 and waited for the gh2.
Handling wise is felt very good, I really like it. The EVF is very good, but I found the LCD displayed the scene more accurately exposure wise which was a tad annoying.
Handling wise you'll also notice the wheel is in the front by your index finger of your right hand on the GH1 but it is moved o the back by your thumb of your right hand (matching rhe GF1, G1, g2 etc), which is a good move. It's a much nicer place to have it.
I also found the flip out LCD very useful. It's really good for finding those interesting angles without getting your face in the mud.
- Atkinson0
Yes I like the design of the gh1 FROM AN ERGONOMIC Point of view [caps lock off!]
The EVF is also a good thing and the GF1 plus EVF = same size as gh1 anyway, almost.
I'm liking the Gf1 so far though, feels tougher / more fun than the EPl1 which felt too plasticy for the money.
