i hate writing copy but ive been asked to write a couple of pages on SEO and PPC...
anyone ever bought such services and over the fee, what would be the things that you needed to know?
- lukus_W0
I don't know much about writing copy, but I've read it's good to approach the task this way:
1) You describe the feature (what is the service / product being sold?)
2) You describe the advantage (what is it that the feature does that makes it special / unique?).
3) You then go onto to describe the benefits (what pay-off / value will the client get from the feature?).If you have a list of the services that are offered, you have the lists of features already. The next step would be to describe advantages and benefits.
Once you've got that down, translating all of this into copy should be a much simpler process.
As I said, I'm not certain about all of this - and writing copy is something that I'd like to learn more about. If anyone else has any ideas, I'd be interested in hearing about them too.

HAHAHA NEVER
SEO is snake oil, well coded HTML pages and actual content on the site is what you need. Want to get higher up the Google rankings? Need to throw money at google then basically for adwords etc.

Every time I see the term SEO, I'm reminded of all these Indian companies spamming LinkedIn groups with their 'services'. No offense to Indians intended.

SEO Expert = a talentless cunt who has paid for a course.

I reckon it's a necessary evil .. people use it, because it can work. But yes -> it's an industry full of charlatans.

pizza.... LOL what are you talking about??
its not snake oil.... well it is if you're clueless....
yes, you need well coded pages, but thats just the beginning...
your site needs to be 'silo'ed'... google silo website. its *how* you structure the site with the keywords... theres a specific way....
then you need incoming links using specific anchor text you wanna rank for.
quality incoming links are by far the biggest thing.
try www.seobook.com
that guy has a LOT of killer SEO tips that work.
- This is assuming everyone is a page-hit chaser.Continuity
- well most people put up sites to make money... you can't make money without website visitors....dconstrukt

I did some work in trade for an SEO/web shop. They got some nice identity work. I got a blog, "customized" Twitter and facebook pages. Shite for all of it. My traffic hasn't changed a whit. They claim it's because I haven't fully "activated" their SEO services. Right.

as an seo myself and ex-web designer (1999-2007) im of the opinion that 99% of seos work should have been done by the designer/developer originally however you cant deny that link building is essential and bloody hard work when done right.
anyways back to the topic at hand... thanks lukus... thats a great help!

Tip number 1 in SEO: take the money you would have spent on SEO and hire someone to write you good content.
Tip number 2: refer to tip number 1.
- Tip number 2 seems superfluousukit

I've worked with an SEO guy, he's actually pretty good. Approaches it more as 'Online Marketing' or a consultant, looking at ways to help a companies website grow, make revenue, get more hits etc. Basically looks at the business as a whole, rather then just getting a website listed on google.
As others have mentioned, SEO is useless if your content sucks, or if the business sucks.
- ukit0
It's true there are a lot of snake oil salesman in the business, mainly cause no one understands what the hell it actually involves, but just because you haven't personally met a great SEO...uh...izer, doesn't mean they don't exist.
The thing is that SEO requires a committed effort. Someone just jumping in and optimizing your content is going to do fuck all - it's like tying someone's shoelaces as they march off into battle. Whether SEO pays off is really a matter of how much effort you are willing to put into it. But it's far from useless.

Actually maybe that's a distinction you could work into your copy to make it not sound like typical boilerplate...something like, "99% of SEOs will just optimize your shite and charge you 10k.

a company i did a website for hired a seo "expert". not only did he "optimize" the website content, he went ahead and renamed the files without renaming the navigation links. on top of that, he renamed the files with php file extension that were used to connect to the database to html.
complete service!
